'DasanHak'(茶山學) is composed of the Knowledge of Confucian Classics as a fundamental study and the administrative study as an applied study
The admimistrative study is formed on the basis of the knowledge of Confucian Classics, which gives birth to democratic ethics. Therefore, the study of 'DasanHak' (茶山學) must be comprehended under the denominations of 'The Basic Morals of The Four Books and The Six Classics'(六經四書).
It is for this reason that this study is to make an inquiry into the philosophical structure and contents for Dasan's Annotations of the Confucian Analects from the Han dynasty to Ch'ing dynasty and those of the classical school of Japen.
First, we note 'the side of structure', investigating an important point of dispute for Annotations of Confucian Analects extending over so many parts above one third of a whole. Dasan criticized the cosmological metaphysics of a school of Confucianism known as the 'Sung-ri'(性理), or more commonly the 'Chuja'(朱子) school on his basis of original view. Even though Dasan had also made much reference to the previous annotations, he discussed the original interpretations in various fields from thought-structural point of view
Second, on the side of contents, the reformed Confucianism of Dasan is not the only one in the world which fits well into such a balanced and comprehensive understanding of man, but Dasan acknowledges that his reformed Confucianism does in fact fit and that it fits well indeed. He replaces rigidity with a flexible readiness to see the needs of the times and accepts reform and change as needed. It was at this point, of course, that he came into major confrontation with the unyielding conservatism of the 'Sung-ri'(性理)school.
He achieved his own original philosophical system by mediating the criticism of concept of man as prescribed by the 'Sung-ri'(性理) school and by the process that criticizes the insufficiency of its pratical ethics in realizing the socio-politically idealistic world does not disregard the basic human relationships.
As for his explanation of perfect virtue (Jen;仁), he regards perfect virtue as the social ethics which strives to materialize high human value, objecting to subjective idealism of Chuja.
As for Chung(忠) and Suh(恕), Chuja regards Chung as a positive activities practising perfect virtue and Shu as a negative activities, through a dualistic approach. Whereas Dasan sees them togother, as united into a Two-in-One identity on the unitary view.
He attaches great importance to the doctrine of 'Su-ki Chi-in' (修己治人), which maybe considered the basic doctrine of reformed Confucianism. Consequently, he not only made a systematic reexamination and critique of Neo-Confucian thought in general but developed an original, alternative philosophical system including a metaphysics and ethics, that revived the practical spirit of Classical Confucianism.
