This research is to analyze the recognition of the students and their parents who are the users of education, and the teachers about the operation of after-school physical education programs and to identify the problems of the programs. To that end, the following research questions were presented.
First, the recognition of the students about the degree of satisfaction with the after-school physical education programs is analyzed.
Second, the recognition of the parents about the degree of satisfaction with the after-school physical education programs is analyzed.
Third, the recognition of the teachers about the degree of satisfaction with the after-school physical education programs is analyzed.
In order to examine the above research questions, researches on the existing literatures together with surveys were conducted, and the researches on the existing literatures were based on the research literatures related to the research theme and on the results of preceding researches. The survey using questionnaires was conducted on 207 students, and 198 teachers of 5 elementary schools located in Seoul, and their 208 parents.
As the methods of survey and analysis for this research to examine the operating conditions through the recognition of the students, teachers, and parents about the operation of the after-school physical education programs in elementary schools, the frequency, the percentages and the X (chi-square) test were conducted. For the data processing, SPSS 11.0 statistical programs were used.
Based on the results of this research, the following conclusion can be drawn.
First, the after-school education is a very effective educational activity to improve school life and the after-school living conditions. It can be helpful to managing the students’ safety and reducing private educational expenses through guiding and managing students continuously at school even after school hours. But only a small number of students receive after-school education, and the parents also prefer private tutorial institutes, so the establishment of the contents and methods of guidance that are differentiated from private tutorial schools is needed.
Second, the after-school physical educational activities of elementary schools establish the basic attitude to the lifetime physical education by enabling students to feel fun through diverse physical activities, to acquire knowledge and abilities related to maintaining and improving health naturally, and to form practical attitudes toward participating in exercises cheerfully and positively. But in reality, the after-school physical educational programs are neglected in the social atmosphere in which physical education facilities for exercises are absolutely insufficient and the tendency to attach great importance to academic backgrounds and private tutorial schooling is predominant. As can be seen in this survey, the after-school physical education programs are not practiced diversely and the participation in the programs is minimal, so the ways of remedying these problems need to be urgently devised.
Third, according to the results of analyzing the realities of the after-school physical education programs of elementary schools, the rate of responses of students, teachers and parents to the questionnaires differ, depending on the regions, so it can be seen that there are differences in the realities of the after-school physical education programs, according to the regions. Accordingly, the teachers should improve the after-school physical education programs so that they can be learned pleasantly, together with diverse activities in accordance with the regional characteristics and the students’ needs.
The after-school programs are the system that can play many roles, but the results differ greatly depending on how this system is operated. So if all the people participating in the after-school programs build up confidence in public education with responsibility and passion, then more students will participate in the programs, and it is expected that the individuals’ aptitude and creative power will be expanded and the parents’ burden will be reduced by the reduction of the private tutoring school expenses.
