Ammonia is a carbon-free energy source that can be combusted directly and is expected to be applied to future energy-transition pathways in industrial and power-generation sectors. However, owing to its high nitrogen content and low flammability, there are concerns that not only CO and NOx but also N2O and NH3 slip may increase during ammonia combustion and co-firing, particularly in fluidized-bed systems that typically operate at relatively low temperatures of 700–900 oC. Because N2O is a greenhouse gas with a global warming potential approximately 273 times that of CO2, quantitative elucidation of combustion behavior and emission characteristics during ammonia combustion and co-firing in fluidized-bed environments is required.
n this study, a laboratory-scale fluidized bed combustor was used to investigate the emission behaviors of pollutants such as CO, NO, and N2O during NH3 combustion under operating conditions designed to represent two different commercial fluidized-bed boiler regimes. The investigation focused on the effects of key operating factors, including ammonia combustion and co-firing with CO, O2 concentration in the flue gas, fluidized bed temperature, gas residence time in the combustor, and NH3 injection position.
During NH3–CO co-firing under oxygen-limited conditions, the high reactivity of NH3 inhibited CO combustion, decreasing the CO2 concentration in the flue gas and increasing the CO concentration from 50 ppm to a maximum of 1856 ppm. At a bed temperature of 840 oC, increasing the O2 concentration in the flue gas up to 6 vol% increased the N2O emissions measured at the reactor outlet to a maximum of 34 ppm. However, under the same feed conditions, when the bed temperature was increased to 920 oC, N2O was not detected at 0 vol% O2 and was 14 ppm at 6 vol% O2. This reduction is attributed to enhanced N2O decomposition at higher bed temperatures. Furthermore, at 920 oC, doubling the gas residence time further reduced N2O emissions owing to the increased reaction time, whereas at 840 oC the opposite trend was observed. Finally, at 840 oC, injecting NH3 into the dense bed zone markedly reduced NO emissions and resulted in no detectable N2O compared with injection through the windbox.
