This study investigated the effects of vocal attack on vocal register transitions in male vocal majors in contemporary music. Experiments were conducted using the EGG-D200 electroglottographic analysis system to examine and compare the vibratory characteristics and changes of the vocal folds according to different types of vocal attack.
The study was conducted by applying four types of vocal attack to six vocal register transitions using six ascending and descending scale patterns. The effects of vocal attack on vocal register transitions were examined by measuring changes in the vocal fold contact quotient and vocal fold vibratory patterns. The experimental results are as follows.
First, the H attack exhibited unstable patterns throughout the vocal register transition process. This instability may be attributed to the phonatory characteristics of the H attack, which include a low vocal fold contact quotient and insufficient glottal closure.
Second, the soft attack showed a general tendency toward instability across most transitions due to weak vocal fold contact and incomplete glottal closure. However, transitions initiated in the head register demonstrated relatively stable patterns.
Third, the normal glottal attack exhibited overall stability across all vocal register transitions. This stability may be explained by the fact that vocal fold vibration was adjusted in a manner consistent with the phonatory characteristics of each register during the transition process.
Fourth, the hard glottal attack showed the greatest relative stability in register transitions involving the chest register, reflecting vocal fold vibratory characteristics required for chest register phonation. In contrast, transitions initiated in the head register displayed relatively unstable patterns.
The results of this study confirmed that the characteristics of vocal attacks that are advantageous in specific registers may be partially maintained during vocal register transitions, thereby influencing the transition process. However, these tendencies were observed to vary depending on the type of register and the direction of the transition. In some cases, certain vocal attacks exhibited consistent patterns across transitions regardless of their phonatory characteristics, while in other cases, attacks with similar phonatory properties produced differing outcomes during register transitions. These findings indicate the presence of diverse and complex patterns in the interaction between vocal attack and vocal register transitions.
This study confirmed that vocal attack is a factor that can influence not only the onset of phonation but also its continuation and the process of vocal register transitions. It is hoped that future studies incorporating a wider range of vocal ranges and both sexes will further contribute to the development of foundational research in contemporary vocal pedagogy.
