The purpose of this study lies to interpret trauma and its signifier in the Louise Bourgeois's works of art. This study is directed at two ways. In the first way, I attempted to read more deeply trauma through expanding contents of Louise Bourgeois with the psychoanalytic approach. Second way is directed at determinating more obviously the manner how trauma is presented in the field of the visual language with analyzing of the signifer
Here, the intention of expanding of Bourgeois's trauma is for that the structural approach is needed, and introducing of the analyzing of the signifier is for that I supposed that the unconscious structure of trauma not so much should be revealed as would be presented in the visual language which Bourgeois produces. that is to say, through the two methodical bases, a hypothesis is being set that the meeting point between the structural aspect presented in the visual language of Bourgeois and the unconscious structure of trauma would exist.
First, I attempted to settle the problem of the psychoanalytic expansion of trauma through Lacan who promoted the psychoanalysis into the structural dimension. In the 1950s Lacan formulates the subject as the traumatic subject, considering the traumatic subject as being that is attracted toward and defense against jouissance: a pleasure that is excessive. Besides, a feature of trauma is accompanied by trauma of signification. This feature of trauma means the non-representable, or that a link between the representation is missed. With this results, I applied the content and the structural feature of trauma to reading trauma and its signifier of Bourgeois.
On the other hand, the repetitive curvature signifier and its fragmented, indeterminate structure was sampled in the light of the visual language of Bourgeois, and analyzed through methodology of feature-analysis. This methodical process is because of the presupposition that a situation of the signifier originated from trauma would reveal the repetitive, indeterminate structure in the context of psychoanalysis. Through this method of visual signifier analysis, I attempted to define the visual language of Bourgeois, and lay the foundation of the interpretation of its signifier.
As a results of this process, the repetitive curvature signifier, main signifier in the works of Bourgeois was interpreted as the signifier of 'object a' in the relation to the direct meaning of trauma, its indeterminate structure is understood through the logic of partial drive as well. Furthermore, the indeterminate structure is expression of death drive, for drive is death drive.
The results of analysis report that in the light of the visual language of Louise Bourgeois, that is, the structural condition of the curvature signifier the indeterminate structure is superior, nevertheless, repetitive, determinative structure is also assigned. This is understood as ambiguous and paradoxical figure of traumatic subject. For the traumatic subject is being that lies in the conflict between repression of the Symbolic and Jouissance destructing its repression, the above result of the analysis shows that Bourgeois, Traumatic Being, is floating between subversion of the Symbolic, or symbolic death as Jouissance and symbolic defence against Jouissance, or symbolic living.
A problem of exploring the way how the dimension of visual language is connected with its interpretative dimension underlies in this study, also show that way practically through the interpretation of trauma and its signifier of works of Bourgeois, even though not enough.
