폴라니의 《대전환》에서 사회적인 것의 개념적 제약 -이론과 역사분석의 쟁점 = Systemic Crisis, The Great Transformation and Hegemony: A Conceptual Barrier of the Social to Historical Analysis by Karl Polanyi

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문의 목표는 폴라니의 역사 분석과 사회적인 것의 관계를 규명하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 사회적인 것에 대한 폴라니의 이해가 19세기 말 대불황과 체계의 위기 경향, 1930년대 체계의 분기와 대전환에 대한 그의 분석에 어떻게 투영되는가를 분석한다. 이러한 작업을 통해 폴라니의 역사 분석에 사회적인 것의 개념적 결함이 작용하고 있다는 점을 밝히고, 사회적인 것의 개념화가 역사 현실 분석에서 갖는 중요성을 확인한다. 사회적 관계와 사회적인 것의 형상의 역사는 개인주의와 유기체주의의 대립과 공존의 역사에서 자유롭지 않았다. 폴라니의 경우도 이러한 대립에서 벗어나지 못한다. 사회적인 것에 대한 그의 이해는 역사 분석에서, 그리고 사회적인 것의 대안적인 형상을 모색하고자 할 때도 제약으로 작용한다. 개인주의와 유기체주의의 대립을 넘어서는 데 필요한 기본 범주들 - 개인성, 사회적 관계, 사회화, 주체화, (정치) 공동체 등 - 과 그 제도 형태들(의 발전, 한계, 위기, 변화)에 대한 재검토는 현실의 역사를 분석하며 현재의 위기에 대응하는 길을 만들어가기 위한 의미 있는 방식 가운데 하나가 될 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The article deals with the relations between the concept of the social and historical analysis in the case of Karl Polanyi’s works. Especially, the author pays attention to his analysis of the tendency of systemic crisis in the late 19th century and its final arrival in the 1930s, which had brought about social catastrophes and great transformations world-wide. Critical scrutiny on the literatures which articulate the Gramscian concept of hegemony with the social in the Polanyian sense has been also conducted, comparing them with the texts by Polanyi. As a result, the author finds that Polanyi’s concept of the social which is caught with the dichotomy of Gesellschaft and Gemeinschaft or the opposition between individualism and organicism functions as a barrier to adequate historical analysis of the cases considered.
