The purpose of this study is to verify the moderating effect of self-compassion in the relationship between emotional expression ambivalence and psychological well-being in upper elementary school children. To achieve this purpose, the following research question is established. First, What is the relationship between emotional expression ambivalence, psychological well-being, and self-compassion in upper elementary school children? Second, What is the moderating effect of self-compassion in the relationship between emotional expression ambivalence and psychological well-being in upper elementary school children?
In order to verify the above research question, data collected from 613 5th and 6th grade students in 10 elementary schools located in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do were used for analysis. The reliability of the measurement tool was verified using SPSS, and descriptive statistics and correlation analysis of major variables were conducted. In addition, the moderating effect of the research model was verified through SPSS PROCESS Macro 4.2, and significance analysis was performed using Bootstrapping.
The results of this study are as follows.
First, there was a significant correlation between emotional expression ambivalence, psychological well-being, and self-compassion of children in the upper grades of elementary school. As a result of correlation analysis between variables, emotional expression ambivalence, a predictor variable, showed a significant negative correlation with psychological well-being, a criterion variable, and emotional expression ambivalence and self-compassion, a moderating variable, showed a significant positive correlation. Self-compassion showed a significant positive correlation with psychological well-being.
Second, a significant moderating effect of self-compassion was confirmed in the relationship between emotional expression ambivalence and psychological well-being of children in the upper grades of elementary school. As a result of confirming through the path coefficient calculation, the direct effect from emotional expression ambivalence to psychological well-being was significant, and the path through which self-compassion modulates the influence of psychological well-being was also significant.
The results of this study are significant in confirming the relationship between emotional expression ambivalence and psychological well-being, and revealing that self-compassion controls the relationship between emotional expression ambivalence and psychological well-being. Therefore, the results of this study suggest that it is necessary to intervene based on self-compassion to improve the psychological well-being of children in the upper grades of elementary school.
