    This thesis is to analyze what factors determine research productivity of S&T researchers, particularly who participate in the BK21 PLUS program of Korea. Number of papers, patent and a combination of them are included as indices for variables of research productivity. Individual explanatory variables are sex, age, academic rank and location of affiliation, and environmental variables are research funds, graduate students.

    Data is from 1,383 researchers affiliated to 28 universities and 6 academic fields such as physics, chemistry, biology, mechanical engineering, electricity and electronics, and chemical engineering. The data is a 3-year average during 2010-2012 reported to the National Research Foundation of Korea.

    This paper is composed of 2 parts. The first part is an analysis of all the data, and the second part is an analysis by fields. Each part has the difference test in productivity by groups in personal factors and resources factors, and correlation analysis for the relations of productivity and effective factors, and further regression analysis for determinants.
    Findings are as follows;
    • Fields of natural science are less influenced by resource variables such as research funds and graduate students than engineering. That is, unlike natural science, engineering shows that the more resources, the higher productivity.

    • In productivity, the natural science has more weight on paper than patent. However engineering shows relatively higher weight on patent than natural science.

    • Most effective factors in determining research productivity are master students, not doctoral students. There are slight differences by fields. In particular, master student has greater influence than funds in engineering.

    • Effect of research fund by government is not so great. It is less influential than master student. Even though government and industry funds effect on productivity simultaneously, industry fund is more influential. Especially on patent, industry fund is strong explanatory variable.

    • Academic rank is a very important variable. Productivity by rank shows high consistent with resources than any other classifications. The higher rank, the higher productivity and more resources.

    • Productivity difference between locations is confirmed in all the data. However, there are differences between fields. Biology, mechanics, and electronics and electricity show differences.
    This research has some contributions on theory and analysis; In particular, this paper uses official data reported to the NRF, and productivity indices of paper, patent and the combination of these two indices.

    However, some limitations are also found. Productivity indices don’t include presentations in academic conferences, publications of books, and papers on domestic journals. Other important variables are not included in this analysis such as careers, human networks, Post-Doc. and full-time researchers, equipments, and size of laboratory or department and so on.

    And also the results of this research have limitation in applying to all the academic fields, because this is an analysis of only 6 fields. Therefore additional researches including more variables and fields are need.
