This study is a strategy to achieve the purpose of mobilization of empathy ability and critical thinking power of Korea. The purpose of our research is as follows. The following research questions were formulated for the survey.
Question I. What is the effect of early childhood literacy education using storytelling on infant empathy?
Question II. What is the effect of early childhood literacy education using storytelling on infant's critical thinking ability?
In order to verify the above research problems, children 's news literacy education using storytelling was conducted for 5 - year - old kindergarten children. The subjects of this study were fifty children aged 5 in the J kindergarten in Incheon city. The experimental group consisted of 25 children aged 5 years in the A class and 25 children aged 5 years in the B class. Experimental and comparative groups were found to be homogeneous groups in terms of average age, empathy ability, and critical thinking ability.
In this study, we used Affective Situation Test (AST) developed by Feshbach and Roe (1968) modified by Lon Yeon-seon (2004) to measure the empathy ability of infants. The sub-factors of empathy are composed of joy, sadness, anger, and fear. In order to measure the change of critical thinking ability of infants, we used 'Critical Thinking Measurement Tool' developed by Kim Hyun - kyung (2002).
The sub-elements of this tool are 'to recognize different viewpoints', 'to verify their thoughts', 'to judge them by reason', 'to predict results', 'to apply the criteria applied to others' And a total of five. The results of this study were as follows.
First, it was effective to improve children 's empathy ability by using storytelling. The experimental group showed a higher mean score in joy, sadness, and anger than the pre - test after experiencing early childhood literacy education, and showed statistically significant difference. Second, it was effective to improve infant 's critical thinking ability through storytelling. In the experimental group, the children experienced the news literacy education activities using storytelling and compared the pre - test with the post - test 'recognition of different viewpoints',' verifying the idea ',' And 'Applying the criteria applied to others to me' showed high scores and statistically.
