The purpose of this study was to find out the effects of storytelling on the English listening ability and vocabulary acquisition at kindergarten.
The concrete research questions are as follows:
1. Does storytelling have effect on English listening ability when infants are taught?
2. Does storytelling have effect on English vocabulary acquisition when infants are taught?
3. Does storytelling have effect on the interest about English culture when infants are taught?
In order to clarify the purpose of this study, two groups were made by dividing 40 infants being 6 years old into two : one group consisted of a half taking part in storytelling class and the other was composed of the rest of the infants participating the class with Audio-visual teaching method. The result of learning has been measured by the survey on infants' interest as well as listening and vocabulary evaluations.
The results of this study can be summarized as follows:
1. Listening and speaking ability has been more improved with storytelling than with audio-visual teaching method.
2. Vocabulary acquisition has been more improved with storytelling than with audio-visual teaching method.
3. The group's interest in English has been less increased after teaching through storytelling than the other group's.
In conclusion, the findings on this study suggest that English storytelling is effective and meaningful to develop and improve the infants' English ability. However, learning English itself can be a burden and stress to infants.
