미군정기 『한글 첫걸음』 교재에 대한 맥락 연구 = A Contextual Study on the Korean Textbook First Step in Korean by the U.S. Military Government in Korea

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper analyzes the historical and textbook content contexts of First Step in Korean, the first textbook for learning Korean published after Korea`s liberation. The book was a special textbook created by the Joseon Language Academy and published by the education and management bureau of the U.S. Military Government in Korea. It`s publication was significant in that it completely ignored the traditional syllabic approach to Korean education and adopted the alphabet teaching method. While the textbook was promoted by the Joseon Language Academy, which had led the fight against the repression of Japanese colonial rule, and became hugely popular with its inclusion of emotional content dealing with the history of Korea`s liberation, it also had another respect of being publicized through a dedication ceremony by the U.S. Military Government. The book`s shabby compilation is also indicative of the historical context of the Joseon Language Academy in which Korean education scholarship had been neglected due to the Academy`s work on dictionary compilation and the so-called Joseon Language Academy Incident. In this context the characteristics and significance of this textbook`s content structure are manifested.
