Expansion of social and economic activity and population growth has transcended the limit of environmentally sustainable restoration activity.
Lately It has been recognized that natural disaster such as the rise of average temperature, drought, heavy rain, heavy snow, rising sea levels including global warming has led to destruction of nature and threatened human survival. The effort to improve those matters has been found in various fields around the world.
This study is to design the education space for ecological education, which is fundamental for the global environment. The ecological education is consists of the biological nature, the inanimate nature where the biological nature live in, the interrelationship between the biological nature and the inanimate nature and the interrelationship with human being.
The purpose of this study is to encourage students to have knowledge and insight of nature through practical experience and to have awareness and attitude toward nature's wonder.
Therefore, this study was conducted with the purpose of building a place for eco-experience education by using school's roof-top space. First, this study searched for effective design to structure a place for eco-experience education by analyzing documentary research, field study, green roof of our country and abroad, and actual condition of roof-top space.
In this context, this study limited 11 elementary schools in Seoul and conducted field study. Based on the research, this study was performed on the purpose of analyzing possibility of ecological education status at elementary schools and utilization plan of roof-top space. Among schools, Daemyong elementary school was selected to suggest design model of eco-experience education place at a top. Daemyong elementary school is located in Seoul, Gangdong-Gu, Myong-il Dong. Since the school do not have much flower garden and landscape gardening, it has suggested to design eco-experience education space by using a roof-top.
A design suggestion goes toward to classifying and understanding its functional roles and performing.
First, a design should make a place that has ecological functions and landscape functions, improving the urban landscape by considering general features. It is also required to save cooling and heating energy, to enhance the value of building and to have educational value.
Second, ecological garden is the most effective way for ecological-first hand experience learning.
Ecological garden is essential on the purpose of loving the nature through experience of changes of weather and season, the growth of vegetation, joy of harvest by cultivating his/her own garden of vegetables and fruits by hand.
Third, a place of research on nature should be sustainable development through student's investigation of nature. On this, this study desire to create a roof-top eco-experience learning space for investigation and observation of nature.
Fourth, a roof garden, which is good for health and communication, helps to enhance psychological contentment and stability, to relieve stress, to improve concentration, mental alertness and physical health. Furthermore, it also can be used as a place to interact with friends.
Eco-experience learning schools provide green space in living place by introducing ecological environment to natural environment and the schools show many different learning styles.
This would establish the foundation of ecological education which is not attained by visiting learning place but personal experience by taking courses at school. Furthermore, it can provide a loving space for learning, leisure, relaxation and function as central role of cultural facilities connecting with community.
