도미니크 아르젠토의 ‘엘리자베스시대 6개의 노래’에 관한 연구 = A Study of Dominick Argento’s 「Six Elizabethan Songs」

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 Dominick Argento(b.1927~), -이하 아르젠토라 함-의 ‘Six Elizabethan Songs(엘리자베스시대 6개의 노래, 1957)’에 대한 연구 논문이다.
뛰어난 미국의 현대 작곡가로 평가받는 아르젠토는 작품성 높은 문학작품과 전통적인 음악기법, 현대적인 음악기법을 잘 접목시켜 그만의 개성 있는 곡들을 많이 작곡 하였다.
그 중 ‘엘리자베스시대 6개의 노래(Six Elizabethan Songs, 1957)’는 아르젠토의 연가곡들 중 널리 알려진 곡들 중 하나로, 영국 엘리자베스 시대문호들의 작품에서 발췌한 시를 가사로 인용하였으며, 그의 감각적인 음악기법이 잘 표현된 High Voice 성악가를 위한 작품이다. ‘엘리자베스시대 6개의 노래(Six Elizabethan Songs)’는 봄(Spring), 잠(Sleep),
겨울(Winter), 애도가(Dirge), 디아페니아(Diaphenia), 찬미가(Hymn)로 이루어져 있으며, 자연적 소재(제 1곡 Spring, 제 3곡 Winter), 죽음(제 2곡 Sleep, 제 4곡 Dirge), 찬미(제 5곡 Diaphenia, 제 6곡 Hymn)
세 가지 주제로 나누어 볼 수 있다.
본 논문에서는 아르젠토의 생애와 작품을 연구하고 ‘엘리자베스시대 6개의 노래’의 가사, 조성, 형식 등 작품분석을 통하여 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다.
시문학의 고전적 기법과 음악의 현대적기법이 잘 어우러진 뛰어난 작품이며, 성악성부의 음역이 넓지 않은 곡이지만 다채로운 리듬과 표현으로 High Voice 연주자가 큰 기량을 발휘할 수 있도록 작곡된 곡이다.
시의 각운을 고려하여 그에 맞는 리듬, 음정, 조성, 형식 등을 사용하였으며, 모호한 조성으로 잦은 전조와 미해결 화성진행 같은 현대적 작곡 기법을 볼 수 있고, 변박과 리듬의 변화를 볼 수 있다.
6개의 곡들은 공통적으로 곡의 마지막 부분들이 테누토(tenuto), 피아노(p), 피아니시모(pp)와 같은 악상기호로 과장되지 않고 절제된 표현으로 끝을 맺는다.
본 논문은 아르젠토의 곡을 연주함에 있어, 그의 음악세계를 깊게 이해하고, 음악을 표현하는데 그 목적을 둔다.

ABSTRACT

A Study of Dominick Argento’s
「Six Elizabethan Songs」

This article regards a study of ‘Six Elizabethan Songs(1957)’ composed by Dominick Argento(b.1927~), -hereafter, called as Argento.
Argento, praised for one of excellent modern American composers, wrote a number of music with his unique compositional style, which highly acclaimed literature are combined with the traditional musical techniques and the modern ones skillfully.
‘Six Elizabethan Songs’ is one of well-known song cycles for High Voice, and the lyrics are derived from poems extracted from the works of Elizabethan great writers. The ‘Six Elizabethan Songs’ is considered to be composed of Spring, Sleep, Winter, Dirge, Diaphenia, and Hymn, and to be sorted into three subjects; natural materials (the first song, Spring, and the third one, Winter), death (the second song, Sleep and, the fourth, Dirge), and praise (the fifth one, Diaphenia and, the sixth, Hymn).
In this article be the life and pieces of Argento studied, and conclusions as follows were drawn through analyzing lyrics, forms, and keys of ‘Six Elizabethan Songs’.
The songs are great pieces in well harmony with the classical technique of poetry and the modern one of music, and are composed so that musicians with high voices can show their best techniques with diverse rhythmic patterns and expressions though not having a wide range of singing.
It is found to use different rhythm, intervals, keys, and music forms, in accordance with each rhyme of poems in the songs, where the modern techniques, such as frequent change of keys with vague compositional techniques, unresolved harmonic progression, and sudden change of meters and rhythmic patterns, can be found.
The six songs commonly came to a conclusion with moderate expressions, like tenuto, piano(p) and pianissimo(pp) at the end of the songs.
This article is aimed to understand the music world of Argento and express his pieces appropriately, in playing his music.
