지역아동센터 이용아동의 부모자녀관계, 사회적 자본, 자아존중감: 통합연구방법의 적용 = Community Child Center Users` Parents-child Relationship, Social Capital, and Self-Esteem: Application of Mixed Research Methods

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study was to explore the relative influences of parent-child relationship and social capital on community child center users` self-esteem focusing on the gender differences and center use period of two years. First, a questionnaire survey with 521 samples comprised of 4th to 6th elementary schoolers, and 1st graders of junior high school out of 50 community child centers was conducted. Data were analyzed with hierarchical regression models. Then, in-depth interviews with 20 children were sequentially conducted for supplementing the quantitative research results and providing meaning structure. The main results were as follows: First, relative effect of parent-child relationship and social capital on the child`s self-esteem between male and female children were quite different. For females, parent-child relationship still had an important influence and center based- and school based-social capital had also similar significance. This was not the case for the males. Second, there was a significant difference according to the center use period. For females who have used the center more than 2 years, the center based- and, school based-social capital had significant effects on self-esteem. For males, center based-social capital had even negative effect on the self-esteem. In-depth interview additionally discovered that the negative effect on male children`s self-esteem was probably due to the differences in educational activity needs and different adaptation on peer relationships. In conclusion, social capital has additional effects on the self-esteem of children from poor families. It was also found that current environment and center program contents do not well fit the needs nor demands of the male children. This implies that center use for a longer period of time would actually has a negative impact on self-esteem for some children. Therefore, diverse activities should be developed considering the propensities of male children, and environments of centers should also be enhanced through networking of related organizations.
