낭만시대를 대표하는 음악가 쇼팽은 피아노를 통하여 자신의 독창적인 음악을 완성하였다. 특히 자신의 무한한 감성을 그대로 표현 하는 것에 주력하였다. 그런 그의 노력으로 조국 폴란드를 위하는 마음, 화려한 피아니스트로서의 삶, 슬픈 사랑과 병약한 육체로 인한 쇼팽의 모든 감정이 그의 음악에 녹아져 있다 해도 과언이 아닐 것이다.
본 논문은 쇼팽의 작품 중에서도 완숙미가 돋보이는 Ballade No. 4의 형식을 분석하고 쇼팽 음악의 독창적인 특징을 고찰하여 쇼팽의 감성이 실현될 수 있는 연주에 도움이 되고자 하였다.
쇼팽은 세 부분으로 나눌 수 있는 형식으로써 소나타 형식의 틀을 취하였고, 그 안에서 주제가 되는 두 악절을 다양하게 순환시킴으로써 소나타 형식과 악절이 반복, 순환하는 특징이 공존하고 있는 자신만의 새로운 형식을 창안 하였다. 또한 두 주제를 다양한 관계조로 엮은 자유로운 조성관계와 악절의 여러 형태에 의한 반복으로, 곡 전체의 통일감과 짜임새를 만들어 낸 것은 전에 없던 자유롭고 새로운 형식이라 할 수 있다. 또한 곡 전반에서 볼 수 있는 쇼팽만의 독특한 선율, 리듬, 화성, 페달은 그의 서정성을 반영하고 있다. 이런 요소를 통해 그의 무한한 감성을 서정적이며 완벽하게 표현할 수 있으며 그의 독창적인 음악을 나타내는데 큰 역할을 하고 있다.

Fryderyk Chopin is one of the renowned musicians of the Romantic era. Chopin developed his unique style of music and especially, he devoted his energy to express his unbounded emotions. Chopin’s music is full of his emotions from his love for his country Poland, glamorous life as famous pianist, sad love stories and even his sickliness.
Ballade No. 4 is seen as one of mature work of Chopin. Throughout this study, musical forms of Ballade No. 4 are thoroughly analyzed considering distinctive features of Chopin’s music. Purpose of the study is to give better understanding in his musical forms and features and thus to help players to realize Chopin’s emotions on playing.
Chopin invented his own form which exists together with Sonata form and repeated, circulated Periods. Using the structure of Sonata form as a basis, Chopin repeated two Periods which become a theme in various ways and circulated in several places. In the progress of relative keys between two themes, it seems to follow a Sonata form, generally have a dominant relation. Furthermore the repeated Periods create an architectonic beauty and systematic efforts which then can be seen as a free Sonata form.
Moreover, in Ballad No.4 Chopin featured number of unique musical elements such as: fine melodies; applying Polish traditional rhythm; using well Tempo Rubato; epochal harmony relations; and freely command of pedal which all together bound perfectly to express his complex emotions.
As a result, both Chopin’s musical form and his exceptional music elements play important roles in creation of his unique style of music.
