The purpose of this study is to develop a curriculum model for brain-based learning theory, and to generate the characteristics and effects of the theory in the South Korean educational context. Brain-based learning theory purports to optimize students' learning while adapting up-to-date findings discovered through brain-imaging technologies, such as the fMRI, PET, DTI, MEG/EEG, and others. Recent research has developed curricula for the theory, but it has a limitation either modulating the theory into a specific subject matter or introducing teaching and learning strategies with a narrow perspective for the theory. In other words, they don't interpret an integrative and general curriculum development model for brain-based learning theory.
In order to overcome the limitation of the recent research, two research questions are discussed here: (1) what is a curriculum development model for brain-based learning theory, and (2) what are the effects of brain-based teaching and learning in South Korean elementary schools? The underpinning motivation behind these questions is to look into ways of synthesizing and integrating individual research for decision-making in a brain-based curriculum development, and to optimize educational practices by research findings.
First of all, to develop a brain-based curriculum model, a meta-analysis methodology is applied. The results from the reviews of literature on human brain research, brain-based learning theory, and curriculum theories are integrated: 230 documents, books, and papers from South Korea and the United States are analyzed for curriculum decision-making. Second, in the process to find out the effects of brain-based teaching and learning, I interviewed 14 educational practitioners for 6 months: a policy maker, two assistant principals, and eleven elementary school teachers all of who have been teaching children on the basis of brain-based learning theory. The data collection consists of audio taped materials and their transcriptions from the in-depth interviews. The main purpose of the interviews is to come to understand practitioners' deliberations and reflections in situations requiring a naturalistic curriculum development.
The results from the analysis were categorized into five conceptual frameworks: (1) goals, (2) selecting content, (3) teaching and learning, (4) assessments, and (5) educational environment. Among the specifically outlined frameworks, the goals of the curriculum are introduced first. Within the curriculum, the goals are intended to enhance learners' understanding while developing both the emotional brain and the cognitive one at the same time. To optimize a learner's understanding, not only an individual brain's uniqueness, but also the concepts of social learning-associated with the social brain-are integrated into the curriculum.
Based on reviewing the literature, four principles are regarded for developing learning content: differentiated contents that address each brain's uniqueness; authentic, experimental, and reflective learning content; meaningful content to strengthen the connections among synapses; and learners' autonomy to choose learning content.
After learning content, the third area to be covered in this study is teaching and learning strategies. With a clear view of the principles underlying the choice of learning content, this study focuses on the following seven teaching and learning strategies: encouraging learners to utilize their emotional brain in improving intellectual power, providing learners with scaffolding through social interactions, teaching in a differentiated classroom, offering integrated instruction to facilitate the brain's patterning, using a variety of memorizing tactics to augment the diverse memory lanes, making use of movement-driven instruction which is involved in the activation of the cerebellum, and adapting images and music while attaining and representing concepts that lead learners to higher order thinking.
In the meantime, three brain-compatible assessments that emphasize the learner's reflection and outcomes have been formulated and are part of the fourth area of the brain-based curriculum to be covered here. They are the following: performance and authentic assessments that help to construct meaningful patterns in the learner's brain; appropriate and useful feedback to enhance learner's view of their achievement; and to create emotionally safe assessment for activating the hippocampus and the cortex that are vulnerable to stress. By the same token, in this section, this study deals with the learning environment which is a threat-free and an ecologically enriched environment with authentic and hands-on curricular materials.
For the second part of the study, I describe the characteristics and effects of brain-based teaching and learning in a South Korean context. Prior to seeking the effects of brain-based teaching and learning what teachers experienced, seven lesson plans and their characteristics are introduced. The distinctive points of brain-based teaching and learning are as followed: concentrating on children's self-directed learning; putting an emphasis on emotional wellness and learning motivation as well as cognitive development; and finally pursuing optimal learning with meaningful concept attainments.
These points enable children to achieve the educational aspiration of the theory. Most notably, brain-based teaching and learning have improved children's intellectual enthusiasm and self-efficiency. Second, self-knowledge and understanding other peers are enhanced in the Community of Learning (CoL). Third, children are able to expand their higher order thinking skills through concept attainment, discovery learning, and self-representation. In short, it implies that brain-based teaching and learning are effective in terms of improving children's understanding and higher order thinking from actual developmental level to their potential developmental level.
On the basis of these features and positive effects, four perspectives in regards to the curriculum inquiry and its development were suggested . First, differentiated educational goals, teaching and learning strategies, and brain-compatible assessments should be implemented to ascertain each brain's potential capability. Second, emotional wellness must be considered and should be included in creating a curriculum. Third, learners need to be able to deepen their understanding of social interaction so the social brain's function is activated. Finally, meaningful concept attainment, images, and music ought to be involved in teaching and learning in order to improve learners' long-term memory.
In a knowledge-based society, it is imperative to develop curriculum to discover learners' practical capability for higher level thinking. I have interpreted recent brain research findings into a curriculum development model to provide optimal educational services for students. It connotes the Zeitgeist that will sustain teachers in their best practices while enhancing their professionalism and educational accountability.
