This study was conducted to investigate the effect of P.E.T training for the fathers of elementary school children in terms of communication and family relationship between parents and children. In order to achieve these purposes, following three hypotheses were made:
Hypotheses 1.
The P.E.T. program applied to fathers will improve the communication skills of parents' side, eventually improving communication between parents and children.
Hypotheses 2.
The P.E.T. program applied to fathers will improve the communication of children's side on the communication between parents and children.
Hypotheses 3.
The P.E.T. program applied to fathers will improve the family relationship.
Twenty two fathers were selected, who have elementary school students, for the study, and classified them into 2 groups such as 11 for experimental group, and 11 for control group. There were 8 sessions of the P.E.T. program for the experimental group. The time of each period for program was 3 hours. In this research, I used the measuring tool, PAC(Parent Adolescent Communication) which was developed by Olsen and Barnes in 1982 to find out the communication relationship between parents and children, translated into Korean by Yunhee KIM in 1990, and improved to the level of the eyes of elementary school children by Yeonjeong KIM in 2003. I also used the same tool, FES(Family Environment Scale) which was manufactured in 1984 by Rudolf Moos and his colleagues to measure the improvement of family relationship, and Jikyoung KIM analyzed its factors and verified its reliability by that tool in 1995.
In this research, I utilized Korean SPSS 12.0 for WINDOWS to verify the effect of experimental implementation in quantity. Especially, I verified the differences of average between the experimental group and the controlled group by this program.
Through this research, the conclusions are as follows :
First, the P.E.T. program applied to fathers was improved the communication of parent's side on the communication between parents and children.
Secondly, the P.E.T. program applied to fathers was improved the communication of children's side on the communication between parents and children.
Thirdly, the P.E.T. program applied to fathers was improved the family relationship.
There are a few restrictions in this research, but the general conclusion is that the P.E.T. program is effective in the communication improvement and the improvement of family relationship between parents and children.
