박경리 소설의 문학적 상상력과 영화적 변용 - 영화 <김약국의 딸들>을 중심으로 = Literary Imagination and Cinematic Transformation of Park Kyung-Lee's Novel in the Movie『the Daughters of Kim’s Pharmacy』

This writing aims to study how the characteristics are revealed when the novelistic achievement in Park Kyung-Lee’s novel <the Daughters of Kim’s Pharmacy> changes into Yoo Hyeon-Mok’s film. Park Kyung-Lee’s novel <the Daughters of Kim’s Pharmacy> is combined ‘family story’ with ‘Korean modern history’, and this novel shows the lives of the characters with the big picture in the history. This novel takes the chaos during the last period era of the Chosun Dynasty and the period of Japanese occupation as the history, and brings the story of the characters, who accept the changes of their lives, to the fore. In spite of the fact that Park Kyung-Lee’s novel is based on ‘popularity’, this is the reason that her novel is highly acclaimed for its literary value. But such achievement of this novel changes in the many different points when it comes to the movie <the Daughters of Kim’s Pharmacy>. First of all, the movie removes panoptic history, which is presented on the novel, and tells the family story narratively. The film shows the general world rather than focusing on the historic space and time and the individuals living in the time lapse. By doing this way, the movie creates a localized new space as a fantasy of the public. This is closely related to the realization of the localized space what the movie intended. Yong-Bin, who is symbolized as a modern subject, accepts old-fashioned local features and harmonizes with it, and gets new identity to realize humanism. While the movie has its popularity and cinematic quality through such dramatic turn, at the same time the movie stands for the art cinema.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 박경리의 소설 『김약국의 딸들』이 보여 주는 소설적 성취가 유현목 감독의 영화 <김약국의 딸들>로 변용되었을 때 어떠한 특성을 드러내는지 고찰하는 데 목적이 있다. 박경리의 소설 『김약국의 딸들』은 ‘가족사’를 ‘역사성’과 결합시켜 역사와 그 안에서 살아가는 인물들의 삶을 거시적인 차원에서 조망하는 특징을 보인다. 구한말과 일제 강점기의 파란만장한 역사적 시간의 흐름을 승인하고 그것에 따라서 삶의 변화를 수용하는 인물들의 가족사로 표면화된다. 박경리 소설이 ‘대중성’에 기반하여 작품성을 획득하는 것도 여기에서 비롯된다. 이러한 박경리 소설의 성취는 영화 <김약국의 딸들>에 오면 여러 부분에서 바뀐다. 우선, 영화는 소설에 제시된 파노라마적 역사성을 소거하고 ‘가족사’에 초점을 맞춰 내러티브를 전개한다. 역사적 시공간과 그 안에서 살아가는 현실적 개인을 사건의 중심에 놓기보다는 역사와 유리된 특별하지만 보편적인 시공간을 연출함으로써 영화는 대중의 판타지로서 새롭게 토속적 공간을 창출하게 된다. 이는 영화가 지향하고자 한 토속적 로컬리티의 세계 구현과 밀접하게 연관된다. 근대적 주체인 용빈은 전근대적 향토성과 결합하고 협력함으로써 휴머니즘을 실현하는 새로운 주체성을 획득한다. 영화는 이러한 극적 전환을 통해 대중성을 확보함과 동시에 작품성을 획득하면서 문예영화로서 자리매김한다.
