한국의 미신담론 이해 : 타자(alterity)로서 무속의 창조과정 = An Understanding of Discourses on Superstition in Korea : Inventing Musok as an Alterity

This article addresses an issue of how discourses on superstition in Korea, such as ‘Umsaron (Discourse on Licentious Ritual)’ during the Choson dynasty and ‘Misinron (Discourse on Superstition)’ during the early modern period, were constructed. Although these two discourses were formed and utilized in different contexts, they could be treated under the rubric of ‘discourses on superstition’ in the sense that they served as the ‘alterity’ for implanting and enforcing new dominant sensibilities of their contemporary societies. In order to understand the alteration-process of shamanism during the Choson dynasty, I characterize shamanic world view with a concept of ‘patronal universe’, and compare it with the Confucian ideology, ‘optimal universe’. Under the rubric of ‘Misinron’, I explain how separating ‘the supernatural’ from the physical world was involved in the process of alteration. An analysis of the alteration-process of specific beliefs and practices, in particular Korean shamanism in this article, demands an explanation about the dynamic inter-relationship between an agent classifying something an other and the classified as such. In this context, this article might be evaluated as a preliminary work for further research on this relationship because it focuses only on the classifying process.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 조선시대의 ‘음사론’과 근대의 ‘미신론’을 포괄하는 한국의 미신담론에 대한 이해를 목적으로 작성되었다. ‘음사’와 ‘미신’이라는 개념은 서로 다른 지성사적 패러다임에서 사용되었으며, 그 개념의 개별적인 의미와 그 개념을 통한 범주화를 가능케 한 세계관이 서로 상이하다. 그럼에도 불구하고 ‘미신담론’이라는 하나의 범주로 다룰 수 있는 이유는 두 개념 모두 당대의 지배적인 세계관 혹은 감수성(sensibility)이 형성되고 심화되는 과정에서 타자(他者)로 기능했다는 점에서 찾아볼 수 있다. 이런 맥락에서 미신담론의 형성과 작용과정에서 특정한 믿음과 실천들, 특히 무속을 ‘미신’으로 타자화시키는 과정에 대한 분석은 타자(alterity)로서 미신이 창조된 과정을 설명하는 것 이외에도, 무속을 미신으로 타자화시킨 지배적인 담론의 유통과정을 명확히 하는 작업이기도 하다. 구체적으로 필자는 음사론 내에서 유교의 ‘최적화 우주론(optimal universe)’과 무속의 ‘보호의 우주론(patronal universe)’의 차별화과정을 통해서, ‘미신론’에서는 근대적 세계관에 근거한 ‘자연’으로부터 분리된 ‘초자연적’ 영역의 생성 및 유통과정 분석을 통해서 무속이 미신으로 타자화되는 과정을 설명하였다. 타자화의 작용에 대한 분석은 타자화의 주체와 타자화된 대상의 사이의 순환과정을 모두 포괄해야 한다는 점에서 이 글은 타자로서 무속이 창조되는 과정 분석의 예비 작업의 의의를 지닌다.
