The purpose of this study was to examine the meaning of thought triggered by Martin Scorsese’s <Hugo> (2011) on the discussion of digital cinema. The state-of-the-art 3D technology used in <Hugo> functions as a mechanism to restore early cinema’s attractions and visual/physical firsthand experience of viewing. In <Hugo>, there are early cinematic perspectives that tried to describe modern machinery (train, clock and automaton) as attractive objects and imaginations that tried to transform such physical realities via cinematic manipulation. They start to activate with dedication to the life and works of Georges Melies, a pioneer in the area of magical cinema.
Early cinematic (filmic) elements at the time of <Hugo> create strained relations with digital technology and help to think about the conditions of contemporary digital cinema. The core of this seems to be that it brings the possibility to think again the issue of indexicality, a huge theoretical dilemma placed between film images and digital images, not from the aspect of realism but from the aspect of fantasy. If one does not have fundamental belief in the indexicality of pre-cinematic objects, Melies-type tricks cannot be operated properly. It is because Melies’ magical tricks only work with such astonishment that although film images describe pre-cinematic reality as it is, ‘how such a thing that a man can appear or disappear all of a sudden can occur?’ However, with the digital fantasy, this issue is no more wonder. In reality, scenes that seem to be impossible to be directed are made from digital special effects undoubtedly and all the people have belief in it. If one does not want to give up attractions for ‘the thing that makes the thing that seem to be impossible to be realized occur’, therefore, it is necessary to have belief in that digital images also can have indexicality on a level of representation and the confidence-based theorization.
The indexicality issue of digital image is connected with the difficulty of historical writing of digital cinema as well. If the history contained in digital images can function as an archive, it is necessary to recover the belief in the relations between cinema and world first of all. The latter part of <Hugo> provides a related proviso, and it can be analyzed with the methodology of ‘Narratography’, a conception created by Garrett Stewart focusing on narrative’s structural strata and media strains. This implies technological improvement in the birth period of cinema and reveals media’s archeological desire to attract filmic archives into the internal logic of digital cinema.
