The birth of Christianity, as a historic turning-point established a ground for the Roman Empire and the European Civilization. Following the ancient Roman culture, the Middle Age had the eastern Christianity as the center of every corner of Life. As the whole Europe united under Roman Catholicism, costume shared an indispensable relation with the religion.
At this juncture, to study Christian costume of the Middle Age gives an important opportunity to understand Catholic costume, since Catholicism has ruled history and tradition for more than 2,000 years. It also helps the process to prove into the history of clothes.
This study is not a simple historical observation of the change of Catholic costume. This study is focusing on the Middle Age when the style of Catholic costume moved into an important stage, aiming at how the style was formed under the circumstance of the Middle Age and the relation with ordinary clothes.
Christianity is divided into Catholicism and Protestantism. This study only deals with the Roman Catholic costume. The reference has a range from books to costume which can be found in several forms of the Christian art in the Middle Age such as painting, sculptures, wall paintings, mosaics and so on, I would like to give a chronological briefing on the background and development of the Christian costumes of the Middle Age.
In the earlier era of Christianity, specifically before Christianity was recognized as the national religion, there was no special costume for Christians which distinguished them from nonchristians. Europeans started wearing oriental costume, dalmatica which was introduced to them with Christianity, In these days they also wore pallium, lacerna, paenula with a religious meaning.
In the Byzantine period, Christianity was recognized by the Roman Empire, the church and the court shared a close relation each other. In this relation, Christian costume showed a similar style to the court costume, most of the European adults wore pallium over dalamatica or tunic. They also wore palludamentum which was regarded as a typical Byzantine costume. With recognition of Christianity by the Roman Empire, inside churches European priests wore tunic, dalmatica, albe, chasuble, cope, which had a religious meaning out of ordinary clothes. Those costume developed into Priest's Liturgical vestment later. Christian costume of the Byzantine Age, were handed down to the Romanesque Period. New details and ornaments were added to the costumes and more splendid fabrics were used for them. All these change created more solemn and dignifying face of the Christian costume. From the Byzantine Period, Ordinary people started to seek fashion and change in their clothes. The trend separated ordinary clothes from the Christian costume which rather held traditional style.
As the separation was intensified in the Gothic Period, there was almost no evidence for a unique change of the Christian costume of the era. The only change could be found in splendor and luxury.
As mentioned above, Catholic Liturgical Vestment had their origin in the ordinary clothes through out the earlier period of Christianity and the Byzantine Period. The Liturgical Vestment gave a motif to the Christian costume of next era.
Although the Byzantine christian costume were handed down to the next era, they were not simply imitated but modified and equipped with beautiful ornaments which matched the unique style of clothes in the period and social factors.
