This thesis aims to
1. Present Christian culture contents as necessary alternatives to the traditional “sermon-centric” structure present in current Sunday schools in churches. This is in response to an increasingly digital world and thus, the inherent learning tendencies of the digital generation of children.
2. Analyze wowqkidz, which has secured a solid position in the consumer market for Christian culture contents, in order to construct a model for other organizations to follow, so that they too can continuously produce their own contents.
For the last nine years, Patmos Christian Contents Group has created and refined wowqkidz. This author will refer to wowqkidz as a primary example to further explain the purpose of this thesis.
Why Christian culture contents are necessary for Sunday school education.
The aging first generation Christians in Korea are beginning to worry about the state of the next generation of Christians. Currently, of the approximate 8.6 million Protestants in Korea, only 7%, (about 600,000) can be classified as next generation Christians. There are many factors that may be contributing to this startling discrepancy in church participation rate between generations. This thesis argues that a central reason is the churches’ inability to reconcile the increasing culture gap between generations. Next generation youth are “digital natives” who feel that their dynamic culture is disregarded as they are forced to adhere to traditional worship services. They find it hard to connect on a visceral level to a message that is delivered solely through speech.
These “digital natives” are heavy multi-taskers and a generation of multiple intelligences. It must be through their culture that the Gospel is communicated to this generation. This reveals the urgent need for Christian contents that are steeped into digital culture. Church should be an opportunity for the next generation to interact with Gospel through their natural culture and language and thus, be transformed.
In response to the above-mentioned need, Patmos Christian Contents Group has continuously supplied over 1000 churches with wowqkidz contents. New wowqkidz contents are produced monthly, each with a new theme. Once created, the contents are sent to participant churches every month. The majority of the contents are contained in a data CD, which has audio files, dance videos, memory verse raps, video skits, animations, bible stories, etc., all which are related to that week’s specific subject that in turn relates to the overall theme of the month. As a supplement, workbooks that explain how to properly utilize the contents are provided for the teachers. Furthermore, the contents include aspects from the entire range of multiple intelligences so that all children with differing abilities can participate in the worship based on their talents.
Patmos surveyed over 100 churches and closely examined the results from 22 churches. The churches that had adopted the wowqkidz curriculum noticed that their digital generation children were generally significantly more excited to attend worship and were more active in participating during service. Even more noteworthy was that the church teachers and ministers themselves who prepared the various sections of the wowqkidz contents were more excited for each Sunday and found more joy in serving the children’s ministry.
A remarkable aspect of wowqkidz is the structure for reproduction that it has established. Wowqkidz specifically targets the digital generation in churches and so adheres to a fixed monthly timeline. Moreover, through the solidifying of this market segment, wowqkidz has contributed to the hiring of talented people engaging in Christian culture. However, one worry for future operations is the disregard for copyrights prevalent in many Korean churches. Some churches have duplicated wowqkidz contents and unreservedly distributed them to others. This has cast a dark shadow on the efforts to continue production and further expansion of wowqkidz contents.
Finally, this thesis presents a project plan to bring wowqkidz from urban churches to the smaller churches dispersed throughout the more rural areas of Korea. At the moment, not only do ministers who graduate from seminaries tend to avoid small churches in rural regions, but also there is a large cultural imbalance between urban and rural areas. As a result, those small churches struggle to properly meet the needs of their next generation Christians. This is why bringing wowqkidz contents to small churches is a practical proposal; it is a plan to catalyze a revival of the next generation.
