In compliance with the situation that only excellent quality and function are hard to attract consumers, the marketing, which induces emotional response rather than consumption by rational judgement, is coming into the spotlight. In regard to consumers, using a word, emotion such as 'emotional marketing', emotional brand', 'emotional consumption' and etc becomes gradually increased, so that researches and methodologies related to various designs based on emotion have been suggested. It is because the most effective method for attracting consumers who receive pouring products and various messages in information society is to delivery messages through emotional communication.
As today diversified design method is required, design development methods are very similar and they are relying on conspicuous graphic for simple visual impact. The methods of delivering brand message to consumers are various, while package design delivers visual message in the point of purchase. In such point, package design does not simply show and tell the image of products but should represent immanent image of products effectively as a constituent of brand. Package design competes based on shown effect. Now, package should be designed to understand the buying psychology and behavioral pattern of consumers accurately and even to include emotional needs beyond the dimension that simply 'includes a product'.
Design is not limited in simply seeing but can feel through the five senses such as the auditory sense, the tactile sense, the sense of smell and the sense of taste including the sense of sight. The sense is the fastest shortcut of being able to approach the emotion of human. Because the senses of human work together, the result of when they are stimulated at once can be more effective. Therefore, if package design is not simply limited in the use of visual element and use together representation elements, which can stimulate other sense factors, package design which can respond to emotional market environment effectively can be created.
Experience remains as the trace of memory in consumers, while representative thing in visual delivery elements that link to such trace is tactility and tactility is very helpful for representing visual richness as the element of having emotional language itself; because visually shown tactility itself provides visual delivery clue already, which allows representing the feeling specifically in the delivery of the product's element. Distinctive tactility of objects is shown by the plane through the sense of sight, and it can be felt indirectly. Tactility probably is not an element which catches easily person's eye, but if being created effectively and generating visual stimulus, emotional feeling could be richly delivered.
This study began assuming that package design, that is the most arousing information delivery medium in the point of purchase, can have positive effect in brand association as strategic use of adding visual tactility representation. Add to it, based on understanding about the sense, this study identified the relationship to visual tactility element focused on the sense of sight and the tactile sense and investigated and researched specific methods. To represent emotional communication effectively through package design, theories about consumer purchase behavior were first considered. And then, based on theoretical background of other related academic fields, this study examined and analyzed how home and abroad juice brands were represented in the relation among visual tactility elements such as shape, color and feel of material.
In positive analysis, 6 representative juice brands were selected and consumer survey, which represented feeling elements of visual tactility as emotional language, was performed. Based on the results from preliminary survey, each two container shapes and logo types of package design, which influenced on positively, were selected, and each one brand which had low intervention inducement of visual tactility was chosen; and then, this study examined them through randomly combined package design. This study examined if visual tactility representation of package design influences on consumers effectively and if consumers recognize positive value in visual tactility of package design. The results of preliminary survey and this study are like followings;
First, if container shape and logo type of package design were remarkably represented in visual tactility representation, visual tactility representation was changed into positive association and then it influenced on purchase behavior. In addition, even if one tactual intervention among container shape and logo type was high, visual tactility representation obtained positive value, and visual tactility delivery of container shape was higher than that of logo type.
Second, as a differential representation method, visual tactility representation seemed to influence on consumers positively; because more intervention of container shape and logo type was, stronger visual interesting was and the tendency which felt the image differently was large.
Third, visually delivered tactility representation largely influenced on association of products' characteristics. Even if one tactual image intervention among container shape and logo type was induced, products' characteristics could be delivered effectively, and if both tactual image intervention were induced, the function of products was more strongly delivered.
In summary, as a differential representation method, package design's representation used visual tactility becomes a major factor of forming positive impression about characteristics of products in consumers' mind. Especially, as certain psychological experience, visual tactility representation can remain in the memory for a long time; the effect of representation used visual tactility can be considered as a suggestion about the design which satisfies purchase needs of consumers. In other words, visual tactility representation seems to improve positive association and the function of satisfying needs by positive association beyond simple linguistic representation.
The limitation of this study was that quantitative data about package design used visual tactility was insufficient as 324. Therefore, sufficient data and analytical data of related companies and researchers are required in following studies. Especially, visual tactility should be used effectively in real market through continuous research of related companies, and this study will be useful for providing basic data in specific process and making design model.
