As international education exchanges take place in a knowledge-based society, the number of foreign students studying in Korea is steadily increasing, and the number of students studying in beauty programs is also increasing based on the excellent technical skills and product skills of the K-beauty industry. In response, we conducted this research to contribute to the globalization of K-Beauty by surveying the current state of college life and adjustment of students studying in Korea, by increasing the number of students studying abroad using the data as basic data for attracting beauty majors.
A survey of 280 foreign students attending beauty-related departments in Seoul, Chungcheong and Honam was conducted on the general status, satisfaction with college life, adaptability, and demand of students, and the research result is as follows.
First, the gender of the female students attending the department related to beauty was more than 80 percent, and they were under 25 years old, while those from China (82.5%), Vietnam (11.0%), and the average of 20 years old. It was mainly Southeast Asia in the order of Mongolia and the Republic of the Union of Myanmar. 76 percent of the students studying abroad had Grade 3 or higher qualifications in the Korean proficiency test, Grade 3 (34.9%) and Grade 4 (24.4%).
On the other hand, the ratio of students who acquired basic grades, Grade 1 (12.2%), Grade 2 (11.8%) and go to study abroad also stood at 24 percent, indicating that some students who study abroad may have difficulties in promoting their studies and building relationships with their friends around them. Motives for studying abroad were found to be superior to Korea's beauty technology (46.3%), job connection (15.4%), and the purpose of Korean study was also proven to be superior in Korea's beauty technology and knowledge, with the highest number of students who replied, "To learn Korean skills and knowledge." In order to attract foreign students from various countries, a multinational public relations plan for Korean Wave should be prepared.
Second, the major field of studying they were interested in was hair beauty the highest (36.2%), followed by skin care and makeup. After graduation, hair designers (29.3%), skin care professionals (25.6%), startups, and makeup artists were the most sought after.
Third, according to the analysis on factors of adjustment to college life for students studying at beauty major, the following factors affected their college life satisfaction: motives of entrancing a school (P=0.000), TOPIK level (P=0.002), educational curriculum (P=0.015), and nationality (P=0.021). Factors affecting the adaptability of college life were analyzed in the form of studying abroad (P=0.003), the length of staying in Korea (P=0.006), and the level of TOPIK (P=0.010). Factors affecting the needs of college life were analyzed in the form of study abroad (P=0.000), TOPIK level (P=0.001), and eductional curriculum (P=0.013) (P<0.05). In order to adapt to the university life and improve satisfaction of students studying abroad, students need support to develop a major subject that they can learn the excellence of beauty technology and improve their Korean language skills.
In order to expand the target countries for foreign students as a result of the above, a variety of efforts are needed to improve the adaptation and satisfaction of college life in order to attract students with beauty majors. In particular, we learned that Korean language support programs should be prepared to create a learning environment where one can learn the excellence of Korean beauty technology and improve Korean language skills. As there were limitations in region the majors in this study, in the future in-depth studies of attracting foreign students and institutional support are required by expanding the target to various majors.
With the above result, in order to improve satisfaction of students who are studying in Beauty department and to increase the number of target countries that will come to study abroad, we need to develop and study courses that can be applied to oversea markets by considering the excellence of beauty technology and the beauty trends in each countries, considering the students that aspire to have jobs based on technology, the Total Beauty center that one can experience Korean beauty technology in person will have to be established and offer various employment opportunities by using industry-academic field training and internship.
The college or the country will also have to provide institutional support such as providing scholarships, visas, and job links for a smooth oversea life by offering an in-depth consultation with professors and expansion of mentoring programs to suit individual standards.
