Bridge approach slabs (BAS) are normally constructed with reinforced concrete slabs in order to minimize differential settlement effects and to provide a smooth transition between the bridge deck and the roadway pavement. All approach slabs are supported on a corbel of the bridge abutment at one end and on the subgrade soil fill at the pavement side, BAS can lose their contact and support from soils due to the settlement of embankment soil. This design results in one structural member being supported by two very different foundation systems.
There are no uniform or rational design procedures for BAS despite of their extensive usage. The current Korean Roadway Design Guidelines treat the BAS as a simply supported beam with 70% of the span length. Whereas the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Stanndard Specification does not provide any guidelines for designing BAS, AASHTO Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) Bridge Design Specifications provide design specification for a simply supported slab bridge designed to span more than 4.6 m longitudinally. This results in very conservative and uneconomical design and alternative design solution is needed to reduce the cost of construction of BAS.
The objective of this study was to investigate a beam on elastic support (BAS-ES) which takes into account a potential loss of soil support underneath the slab. By using the commercial computer software MIDAS/CIVIL, an extensive numerical analysis was performed to determine design moments considering loss of soil support (up to 70 percent) under BAS and the worst loading conditions. Removing springs from certain locations simulated settlement and void formulation in the model. The parameters used in this study were span length, washout length, washout location, soil modulus, and the soil profiles are loose, medium, and dense sands.
It was shown from the parametric study that washout regions closer to the midspan exhibit larger design moment in the slab compared to washout closer to the abutment. The design moments based on AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications were compared to those of Korean Standard Highway Bridge Specifications. Even if the deign moment from BAS-ES was increased to incorporate the effect of the potential washout, significant savings could still be achieved compared to the current BAS design.
