This study aims at comparing and analyzing the various musical characteristics of “lyric comparison” and “Wujo, the highest note of the Korean pentatonic scale, melody” expressed by each changja, the singer, by targeting for analysis at Wujo of Jinyang rhythm of Chunhyangga sung by Kim Sohui of “Kim Sohui Badi” who recomposed the song in her own way after studying both Dongpyeonje, the East School of Pansori, and Seopyeonje, the West School of Pansori, widely, by Bak Bongsul of“Bak Bongsul Badi” who succeeded Dongpyeonje authentically, by Choe Seunghui of“Jeong Jeongnyeol Badi” in the Seopyeonje style, and by Jo Sanghyeon of“Kim Sejong Badi” in the Dongpyeonje style.
The passage to be analyzed in this study is Wujo of Jinyang rhythm in Chunhyangga which includes “Jeokseongga,”“Slow Love Song,”“Gisaengjeomgo,” and “Bakseokchi.”
Before starting analysis, the life and artistic activities of Kim Sohui, Bak Bongsul, Choe Seunghui, and Jo Sanghyeon, the subjects of the sound source for analysis, were summarized through literature review to find out their line of succession of Chunhyangga and musical capacity. The methods of study are as below:
First, the lyrics were compared and analyzed using the Chunhyangga changbon, the transcript of lyrics, of Kim Sohui, Bak Bongsul, Choe Seunghui, and Jo Sanghyeon.
Second, to examine the musical characteristics, they were classified into the type of melody progression according to the melody direction such as the “elongated melody progression” and the ”repetition of same sound melody progression“ and Sigimsae and Buchimsae for analysis as shown in each Wujo of Jinyang rhythm.
The conclusion of this study is as follows:
Firstly, looking at the progress and wording of the content of the lyrics of each passage, the passages of Kim Sohui, Bak Bongsul, and Jo Sanghyeon were almost identical in case of “Jeokseongga,” whereas those of Choe Seunghui were different. In case of “Slow Love Song,”the Chinese character play shown in the passages of Kim Sohui, Choe Seunghui, and Jo Sanghyeon didn’t appear in those of Bak Bongsul. Moreover, when two people call the name of a gisaeng in “Gisaengjeomgo,” the names of the gisaeng in the passages of Bak Bongsul and Choe Seunghui were identical. In “Pakseokchi,” the passages of Kim Sohui and Jo Sanghyeon end when Yi Mongnyong arrives at the house of Chunhyang, while those of Bak Bongsul show that the mother of Chunhyang and Hyangdan pray devoutly together, and those of Choe Seunghui have an additional content where only the mother of Chunhyang pray devoutly. Thus, the content of “praying devoutly” in the passages of Bak Bongsul and Choe Seunghui was shown slightly different.
Secondly, the analysis of the musical characteristics classified into the type of melody progression, Sigimsae, and Buchimsae showed that the “elongated melody progression” in the type of melody progression was shown most frequently because Kim Sohui and Bak Bongsul made ascending leaps of the note in “Jeokseongga” to make the Perfect Unison one parallel progression melody of the note. Meanwhile, Jo Sanghyeon made ascending leaps of the note and elongated it in the parallel progression before it ascended to Major 2nd most frequently, which increased tension through a phase-up process of the note. In“Slow Love Song,” the most common melody progression shown by Kim Sohui, Bak Bongsul, and Choe Seunghui was Major 2nd parallel progression, and Major 2nd ascending after Perfect Unison one parallel progression. In the meantime, Jo Sanghyeon showed Perfect Unison one parallel progression and Perfect Unison one parallel progression after descending leaps most often. In “Gisaengjeomgo," Bak Bongsul mostly showed Perfect Unison one parallel progression melody and Perfect Unison one parallel progression after ascending leaps, whereas Choe Seunghui made ascending leaps before Perfect Unison one parallel progression and Jo Sanghyeon made ascending leaps and Perfect Unison one parallel progression before Major 2nd ascending most commonly. In case of ”Bakseokchi,“ Kim Sohui and Choe Seunghui made only the Perfect Unison one parallel progression melody before Major 2nd ascending, while Bak Bongsul and Jo Sanghyeon made the Perfect Unison one parallel progression melody and then Major 2nd ascending most frequently.
In the “repetition of same sound,” Kim Sohui and Jo Sanghyeon ascended after Perfect Unison one parallel progression, while Bak Bongsul descended after Perfect Unison one parallel progression and Choe Seunghui showed exceptional melody types of the repetition of the same sound. In this repetition of the same sound frequently used, the same sound is repeated before it deviates to other notes and comes back. In “Slow Love Song.” Kim Sohui and Jo Sanghyeon used ascending leaps before Perfect Unison one parallel progression most commonly, whereas Bak Bongsul and Choe Seunghui mostly used the plain melody expression of Perfect Unison one parallel progression. Especially, Kim Sohui showed the melody of the repeated same sound by making ascending leaps to Minor 3rd and proceeding with the repetition of the same sound before she ascended to Major 2nd again and repeated the same sound followed by descending leaps. Kim Sohui, in “Gisaengjeomgo,”showed only the descending elongated melody after Perfect Unison one parallel progression, while Bak Bongsul, Choe Seunghui and Jo Sanghyeon used ascending leaps followed by Perfect Unison one parallel progression most frequently. Kim Sohui, in “Bakseokchi,” used ascending leaps before Perfect Unison one parallel progression, whereas Bak Bongsul used ascending leaps followed by Perfect Unison one parallel progression before descending, Choe Seunghui used Perfect Unison one parallel progression, and Jo Sanghyeon used Perfect Unison one parallel progression followed by descending leaps mainly.
Thirdly, the results of the comparative analysis of Sigimsae showed that Sigimsae in “Jeokseongga” appeared from one syllable three notes to one syllable nine notes. Sigimsae used most often by Kim Sohui and Bak Bongsul was the ascending and descending repeated progression of “one syllable four notes,” while Choe Seunghui used “one syllable three notes” descending→ascending and ascending→descending Sigimsae most commonly. Jo Sanghyeon also used “one syllable three notes” descending Sigimsae and the “one syllable four notes” ascending and descending repeated progression most frequently. Kim Sohui, Bak Bongsul, and Jo Sanghyeon commonly showed the “one syllable four notes” a′→g′→c″→a′ Sigimsae progression. Kim Sohui, particularly, showed it most frequently among them.
Sigimsae shown in “Slow Love Song” is from “one syllable three notes” to 13 notes. The four changjas above used “one syllable three notes” most often; Kim Sohui and Choe Seunghui used the three types of melody progression for Sigimsae including descending, ascending→descending, and descending→ascending, while Bak Bongsul and Jo Sanghyeon used four types of melody progression for Sigimsae such as ascending, descending, ascending→descending, and descending→ascending, progressing with more varied Sigimsae. Sigimsae appearing in “Gisaengjeomgo” varied widely from “one syllable three notes” to “one syllable 14 notes.” The four changjas used “one syllable three notes” as many as possible. Kim Sohui used two types of melody progression for Sigimsae such as descending and descending→ascending, while Bak Bongsul used four types of melody progression for Sigimsae including ascending, descending, ascending→descending, and descending→ascending, which showed the most various Sigimsae among the four changjas. Meanwhile, Choe Seunghui and Jo Sanghyeon showed three types of melody progression for Sigimsae including descending, ascending→descending, and descending→ascending.
Sigimsae in “Bakseokchi” is from “one syllable three notes” to “one syllable 10 notes.” Kim Sohui used four melody progressions for Sigimsae including “one syllable four notes”descending, ascending→descending, descending→ascending, and ascending and descending repeated progression. She used the repeated progression of ascending and descending frequently among them. Bak Bongsul, Choe Seunghui, and Jo Sanghyeon used “one syllable three notes” mostly, showing the same progression of the three types of Sigimsae melody including descending, ascending→descending, and descending→ascending. Like this, although the number of notes attached to one syllable is the same, the pattern of using Sigimsae by each changja appeared to vary.
Finally, the analytical result of Buchimsae showed that, in “Jeokseongga,” Kim Sohui, Bak Bongsul, and Jo Sanghyeon frequently used the exceptional type of Buchimsae where the four syllables of a passage within one rhythm progressed to the 6th beat without pausing from the 1st beat of Jinyang rhythm. Because Choe Seunghui used Buchimsae which proceeded slowly pausing the 5th and 6th beats most frequently, she was considered to be using the function of musical margin often. Yeoggeobuchim and Eotbuchim of over 10 syllables can be found only in Buchimsae of Choe Seunghui. Kim Sohui in “Slow Love Song” paused the 5th and 6th beats showing the relaxed progression of Buchimsae, while Bak Bongsul completed the notes to the end without pausing the 5th and 6th beats, Choe Seunghui used Eotbuchim, and Jo Sanghyeon used the relaxed progression of Buchimsae pausing the 5th and 6th beats and Yeoggeobuchim of over 10 syllables most often. Soggabuchim below three syllables was found only from Bak Bongsul. In “Gisaengjeomgo,” Kim Sohui, Bak Bongsul, and Choe Seunghui used Buchimsae which completed the 5th and 6th beats without pausing most frequently, whereas Jo Sanghyeon used relaxed Buchimsae pausing the 5th and 6th beats most frequently, and Kim Sohui and Bak Bongsul can be characterized by their Soggabuchim below three syllables.
Bak Bongsul in “Bakseokchi” completed the notes without pausing the 5th and 6th beats for Buchimsae, while Kim Sohui and Jo Sanghyeon frequently paused the 5th and 6th beats progressing Buchimsae relaxedly, and Choe Seunghui overwhelmingly focused on “Eotbuchim” more than 50%. The characteristics of Soggabuchim below three syllables was found only from Jo Sanghyeon.
In conclusion, the musical characteristics of each changja were examined by selecting the four passages of Wujo of Jinyang rhythm from Chunhyangga, and analyzing the passages of Kim Sohui, Bak Bongsul, Choe Seunghui, and Jo Sanghyeon, and comparing and analyzing the method of using beats based on the study of the various melody types and Sigimsae and Buchimsae appeared in the Wujo melody. The comparative research of the Wujo melody showed that to know the various methods of using the Wujo melody will have a positive influence on composing diverse Pansori with creativity based on traditions in the future. It is important to know and understand the original forms of traditions correctly to have the flexibility to keep one’s roots in place. Therefore, further studies for broader and more varied analysis of “Pansori Wujo” are required.
