This study analyzed the effect of the competency-based learning environments on the improvement of learners’ bible core and comprehensive competencies in youth bible classes. The research questions were, ‘Is the competency-based learning environment of youth bible education effective in improving the core bible component ability of students?’ and ‘Is the competency-based learning environment of youth bible education effective in improving the bible comprehensive competencies of students?’ it was.
There are three research contents and procedures for solving research problems. First, the necessity of improving critical reflection ability in bible education for youth learners was revealed, and a plan to establish a constructivist teaching and learning environment was explored as a concrete strategy to promote it. Second, after examining the possibility of competency-based learning environment to build a constructivist learning environment based on a system approach, a method for designing competency-based learning environment applying actual problem-based learning was strategies is sought, and finally, competency-based learning environment model was derived. Third, after designing a class based on the derived model and forming two groups whose homogeneity was verified in advance, the experimental group applied a competency-based learning environment, and the control group applied general lecture-style instruction the class was conducted.
As a result of the study, first, there was a statistically significant differences in the core component competencies of bible education between the experimental group that applied the competency-based learning environment of bible education for youth learners and the control group that applied general lecture-style classes. And as a result of analyzing the difference in each sub-area of the bible core component competencies, there was a statistically significant difference in the discover concepts. Second, there was a statistically significant differences in bible comprehensive competencies between groups. And, as a result of analyzing the difference by sub-area of comprehensive competencies, there was a very statistically significant differences in the appropriateness of inquiry, specificity of solution, self-reflection areas.
Two conclusions could be drawn based on the study results. First, it can be said that the competency-based learning environment in youth learners' bible education is effective in forming the core component competencies. In particular, it can be interpreted that the improvement of the bible core component competencies is due to the improvement of the discovery of concepts, which are sub-areas. Second, it can be said that the competency-based learning environment in youth learners' bible education is effective in forming learners' bible comprehensive competencies. In particular, it is interpreted that the improvement of competencies is due to the improvement of the sub-areas of the appropriateness of inquiry, specificity of solution, self-reflection ability.
From the above, it can be said that the competency-based learning environment of youth learners' bible education is an effective way to improve learners' bible core competencies and bible comprehensive competencies. However, since the experiment period is short-to-mid-term and is a study for a limited number of units and learners, a more mid-to-long-term approach and follow-up studies to verify the effect of applying it to various units and learners are needed. In addition, it is necessary to establish an assessment tool that evaluates high-level abilities across a variety of subjects and learners.
