The policy of teaching English to the lower grades in elementary school has been the subject of much controversy since it was announced by the Ministry of Education and Science Technology Development in 2006. This study set out to give English classes based on Blended-Learning kind of integrated onㆍoff line learning to 1st graders and to search for effective ways of teaching English to 1st graders based on the results.
For those purposes, 3 1st graders from one class at J Elementary School located in Sunchang-gun, Jeonbuk Province made the subject group. Experimental class was given to them from September to December, 2008. The teaching materials used by the model schools of elementary English education were used.
Interviews for basic information was made up to examine if the subject 1st graders received English education before entering elementary school and their concern with and interest in English. A survey was conducted to understand the subjects in the affective domain(interest, confidence). For class analysis, interest, confidence, listening and speaking competence analysis were carried out after videotaping each of the experiment classes. And then application plans for 1st-grade English education were searched for through the self-evaluation and on-line learning diary.
The research findings were as follows:
First, class analysis results indicate that there were positive changes in interest and confidence, the affective domain. And the frequency of the students' listening and speaking communicative functions rose.
Second, the students' interest and confidence in the affective domain about Blended-Learning were surveyed by questionnaires before and after the test. As a result, all of their interests rose but in confidence 1 student who is not qualified with ICT using competence revealed negative result. This indicates that for the student who is not qualified with ICT using competence though his or her parents help him or her, Blended-Learning can make difficult.
And third, on-line learning diary and interviews were analyzed. The on-line learning diary analysis results reveal positive(68.4%) and negative (31.6%), positive is higher than negative. But the student who is not qualified with ICT using competence had not written the diary though he did on-line learning. So it was impossible to analyze. And post-test interviews show that students who is qualified with ICT using competence revealed positive reaction both on-line and off-line learning. But the student who is not qualified with ICT using competence revealed positive reaction only for off-line learning not for on-line learning. Therefore it shows the difficulties that students who is not qualified with ICT using competence have.
In short, it turned out that the 1st graders enjoyed English classes with a sense of interesting. But for the Blended-Learning there were only effects for the case of qualifying ICT using competence. It is hard to expect positive changes not for the case. So it is important that securing the number of English classes for lower graders, not qualified ICT using competence. I hope that lower grade English education which is suitable for Korean circumstances would be consisted through more diverse researches and searching effective teaching ways for lower grade English education from now.
