Between August I977 and August 1979, there 54 patjents (with exudative pleural effusion) admitted to Chosun University Hospital.
For diagnostic purposes, percutaneous needle biopsy of the pleura with Abrams needle and/or Cope needle was performed. Both the initial clinical and the pathological diagnosis was compared with the final diagnosis in order to evaluate the diagnostic value of percutaneous needle biopy. In addition bacteriologic and cytologic studies were also performed.
The result were as follows :
1. A final diagnosis was obtained in 92.6% of the patients. In order of frequency the incidence of tuberculosis was 63.0% and that of metastatic cancer was 29.6%.
2. It was found that for the patients with tuberculosis the clinical diagnosis correspond with the final diagnosis in 88.9% of cases and in the patients with cancer the rate was 71.2%.
3. In patients with tuberculosis. the clinical diagnosis was same as the pathological diagnosis in 66.1% of cases and in the patients with cancer the rate was 50.0%.
4. In comparing the pathological diagnosis with the final diagnosis of 34 patients tuberculosis was confirmed in 70.6% of cases and cancer was confirmed in 56.0% of cases. No discrepancy was found between the pathological diagnosis and the final diagnosis. This proves that the pathological diagrosis has a very high significant diagnostic value.
