The characteristic of 20th century music is diversity. Diverse styles and forms emerged in every genre. The composers of 20th century tried to replace the tradition with a new system that they made. Also, they tried to find a new expression, absorbing traditional elements, which was called neo-classicism.
Neo-classicism was well expressed in German composer, Paul Hindemith's 3Piano Sonatas. These sonatas have elements of classicism in structure and form, but melodic patterns, rhythm, and style of movements are close to Baroque style. Hindemith's Piano Sonata No.3 was large-scaled music and counterpoint was uniquely used.
This thesis tries to study Hindemith's Piano Sonata No.3. This Piano Sonata No.3 does not embrace traditional elements simply, but changes them individually, which changes the tradition in a modernized way. In particular, by using brief melody, clear chords, and counterpoint, Hindemith emphasized the necessity of tonality.
In addition, 20th century composers made attempts to get diverse quality of a tone by using harmonic discord and percussion-performing method. Hindemith's Piano Sonata No. 3 has the good characteristics attempted in 20th century. Also, it is the work which shows new potentiality of piano sounds. This study will try to present the possibility of modern music related to tradition that Hindemith' works show in the 20th century piano music.
