Experiences of feeling that one’s mood changes with the seasons and the weather, and that the music one wants to listen to changes accordingly, are familiar to everyone. Building on these everyday experiences, this thesis examines how seasons and weather alter people’s affective states, and how those affective changes are in turn linked to preferences for musical mood and tempo. To this end, James A. Russell’s circumplex model of affect was adopted as the theoretical framework, and prior studies were reviewed to first organize the relationships between seasons, weather, and affect, and between affect and musical elements. The affective space was then divided into four quadrants, and each quadrant was modeled as corresponding to one of four types of musical mood. The empirical survey presented eight scenarios that combined season and weather, and asked respondents, for each scenario, to repeatedly indicate the music genre and tempo they would most like to listen to. The reported genres were reclassified into four musical mood types according to their affective impressions, after which multiple response analysis, cross-tabulation, and chi-square (χ²) tests of independence were applied to verify whether the preferred musical mood and tempo actually differed depending on season and weather conditions. The analysis showed that in pleasant, high-arousal situations such as clear days in spring and autumn, respondents mainly chose high-energy music with a bright and lively mood and medium-to-fast tempos. In unpleasant, high-arousal situations such as clear or rainy summer days, they primarily preferred tense, stimulating, high-drive music and fast tempos. In unpleasant, low-arousal situations such as rainy days in autumn and winter, there was a clear tendency toward sad music that calms or dampens emotions and slow tempos. Finally, in pleasant, low-arousal situations such as rainy days in spring or clear days in winter, respondents mainly selected stable music close to a comfortable and cozy emotional state, along with slow tempos. These findings are meaningful in that they organize, within a single continuous structure, which moods tend to arise under particular seasonal and weather conditions and what kinds of musical mood and tempo people wish to listen to in those moods. By arranging season-and-weather–affect–music preference into a single flow, the study offers an integrated perspective that brings together meteorology and environmental psychology with affective and music psychology. The results can serve as basic data for developing music recommendation services that use weather information, background music for spaces tailored to specific seasons and weather conditions, and emotion-education and mood-regulation programs in school or counseling settings.
