Examined in this article are the activities of two individuals, named Inasa(移那斯) and Madoh(麻都), who lived on the Korean peninsula in the early half of the 6th century. They were closely affiliated with not only the Korean peninsula but also with the Japanese Wae(倭) across the sea. But they were not exclusively tied with either side. Strictly speaking, they existed right in the middle of those ancient states, as rather ‘marginalized’ beings.
Initially, they were members of the leading party of the Northern Gaya region. After being attacked by Baekje they were forced to relocate to An’ra-guk at the south side of the Gaya region, and began to display anti-Baekje activities. They also maintained a close relationship wth the Japanese Wae. But they were still outsiders to both An’ra and Wae.
Their such status was what also enabled them to widen the range of their activities, especially in the southern side of the Korean peninsula in the 6th century. Formerly as a ‘Japanese unit(“Ilbon-bu”),’ they served as mediators between Shilla and Gaya, of which the latter –with An’ra as its core- was trying to approach the former. They were able to take on such role because they did not have any antagonized relationship with Shilla, whereas both Gaya and Wae were having difficulties establishing amicable relationships with the Shilla people. Inasa and Madoh continued negotiations between the Gaya region and Shilla, and also received official titles from the latter. In the process, they cultivated an identity affiliated with Shilla, and probably a sense of belonging as well, but that did not mean they became full Shilla citizens, or came to be considered as Shilla brethren by the Shilla people.
The Korean peninsula in the 6th century’s early half was witnessing entangled relationships in need of diplomatic negotiations and resolutions. Baekje and Shilla were showing a strained relationship while the Gaya states were desperate, and as marginalized beings, Inasa and Madoh could serve as diplomatic intermediaries whose service turned out to be beneficial to all parties involved. But changes to such environment also brought changes to their status as well. After the Majin-seong fortress battle in 548 as well as its aftermath, their service was no longer required and they were both expelled or abandoned from An’ra and Wae. They were able to thrive in a situation that required active arbitration, but as they did not belong to any of the parties they were trying to connect, a tragic ending was inevitable.
