스포츠 클라이밍의 매력과 문화특성 = The Attractive and Cultural Characteristics of Sports Climbing

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study was to discover the attractiveness of sport climbing that sports climbing participants experienced and the cultural aspects of the participation experience that they valued. The ethnographic method was used to gather in-depth insights into how the participants perceived their sports climbing experiences. In doing ethnography, in-depth interviews with 10 sports climbing participants in B city were conducted, and the literature on sports climbing experience were reviewed. The findings revealed that the attractive features of sports climbing were 1) a sense of accomplishment that can be felt at every stage, 2) the ease access to the activity, and 3) reducing negative stress and maintaining positive stress. The cultural aspects of sports climbing were found to be 1) showing off and 2) indoor climbing gym tour. Although sports climbing participation has long been recognized as an extremely dangerous sport in South Korea, the results of this study suggest that sports climbing participation is by no means such that dangerous. Also, sports climbing has a potential to be more popular through the influx of youth people and the increase of sports climbing facilities, such as indoor climbing gym. This study has a significance for people who need the information about the personal and cultural aspects of sports climbing participation and its experiences. The findings will provide useful information to support in developing political and institutional strategies to invigorate the sports climbing participation as Sport-for-all.
