This dissertation focuses on the traditional costume of the Dong ethnic group in China, examining its historical origins, craftsmanship, cultural values, and pathways for modern application and innovation. As an essential component of China’s intangible cultural heritage, Dong costumes embody rich social memory, ethnic identity, and aesthetic traditions. However, under the impact of globalization and modernization, traditional crafts and wearing practices are facing rapid decline. Guided by the dual objectives of “protection and inheritance” and “innovation and application,” this study seeks to explore the contemporary value of Dong costumes at both theoretical and practical levels.
Methodologically, the research adopts a comprehensive approach that integrates literature review, field investigation, artifact analysis, cross-cultural comparison, and design experimentation. Fieldwork conducted in Guizhou, Guangxi, and Hunan systematically documented production techniques, colors, patterns, regional variations, and cultural meanings. Drawing on comparative studies with other cultural traditions such as Korean hanbok, the study further highlights the shared challenges and adaptive strategies of ethnic costume in modern societies. In addition, design practice and case studies are employed to reinterpret core craft elements—indigo dyeing, batik, embroidery, and silver ornaments—into contemporary design language.
The findings reveal that Dong costumes are not only cultural symbols of ethnic heritage but also valuable resources for contemporary design innovation. In terms of preservation, it is essential to strengthen archival and digital documentation, and to establish community-centered mechanisms of living transmission. In terms of application, the study advocates integrating Dong costume culture with modern fashion design, education, and creative industries to enhance its social impact and economic value. A “research–design–industry” triadic model is proposed to promote sustainable vitality of ethnic culture in the global context.
The main innovations of this dissertation lie in three aspects:
(1) positioning Dong costume as a cross-disciplinary research subject that integrates design studies, ethnology, and cultural industry perspectives; (2) employing cross-cultural comparison to reveal common challenges and distinctive pathways of traditional costume under globalization; and (3) combining practical cases with theoretical exploration to propose operable design methods for creative transformation and innovative development of ethnic heritage.
This research contributes to the academic study of ethnic costume, provides actionable strategies for integrating cultural resources into contemporary design and industrial development, and holds significant implications for the protection of intangible cultural heritage, fashion design education, and cultural creativity.
