The aim of this study is to analyze the cultural contents in the middle school English textbooks and study its implications for teaching in English classrooms and writing textbooks. The study is based on the data collected from 15 middle school English textbooks and the questionnaire to English teachers for the aim of the study.
The research questions are as follows:
(1) What topics do the cultural contents in textbooks cover?
(2) What kinds of activities do the cultural contents in textbooks present?
(3) Are cultural contents in textbooks integrated with four language skills?
(4) What is the teacher’s experience and perception of culture education?
The results are as follows:
(1) Behavioral culture in non-English speaking countries has the highest percentage in 15 English textbooks. On the other hand, Korean culture has the lowest percentage among various cultural backgrounds.
(2) Individual activity has the highest percentage among three activity types.
(3) Cultural contents are presented with four language skills only in 3 out of 15 textbooks.
(4) Most teachers have difficulties in teaching culture because of the lack of detail in the textbooks and teacher’s manuals.
In conclusion, cultural contents have low percentage in English textbooks in spite of the importance of culture education. In most textbooks, cultural contents are not presented with four language skills. Although most teachers recognize the necessity of teaching culture, English class does not provide systematic culture education.
Based on the result obtained, the study suggests that English textbooks should have more Korean culture and cross-cultural contents and that cultural contents should be presented with four language skills in order to help learners build the intercultural competence in English classrooms. In addition, the study also suggests that systematic support for culture education can improve the cultural instruction in English classrooms.
