위험커뮤니케이션의 개념화, 구조 분석 및 영역 설정에 관한 연구 = A Study on the Conceptualization, Structural Analysis and Domain Establishment of Risk Communication

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Reflecting that the topic called ‘Risk’ has not been vitalized in the academic circles, this thesis aims to explore concepts related to risk communication, such as risk causes, formation process and characteristics and receivers’ perceptions and its relation with the media, which have been discriminately regarded so far. Through this exploration, it can be meaningful as an experimental research to include risk communication as one of the communication research fields. The risk of the modern society has a multi-dimensional definition along with a complicated social meaning, and its classification can be very diversified by risk causes (natural, technical and social risks) and macroscopic aspects (ecological, technological, social and geopolitical risks). Most of all, such a risk may be either amplified or reduced depending on the public’s preception and receptive attitude of the public, and the media plays an important role in mediating it. Not only the importance of technical approach for safety in so-called ‘risk society’ but also that of social approach is gradually emphasized for smooth communication. Therefore, as a process of communication which topicalizes ‘supposed damage’ in the relation of individual and social decisions, the importance of risk communication is more emphasized. Besides, the discussion on the structure of risk communication is changing from an one-way flow, which focuses on experts’ knowledge to a two-way flow, which considers the public’s social and cultural context. At present, the research on risk communication is mostly focused on technological risk, including all the other fields, such as risk perception, risk management, risk behavior and risk reception. Moreover, as a new risk, digital risk is suggested from a digital point of view, so that it can be regarded as a new risk research domain fit for the current trend. Overall, it is needed to realize that the prevention and post-prescription of our social risks should lie on the recovery of communication and the formation of public opinions.
