『雜同散異』를 통해 본 순암 문학관의 일단 -필기패설의 鈔書- = An Aspect of Sunam’s Literary Perspective as Seen Through Japdongsani -Focusing on the Transcription of Anecdotal Writings-

This study aims to elucidate an aspect of Sunam Ahn Jeong-bok’s(1712-1791) literary perspective by analyzing the inclusion of miscellaneous notes and anecdotal writings(筆記稗說) in Japdongsani(雜同散異), a compilation attributed to Sunam. While Sunam has traditionally been regarded as a rigorous scholar, this research seeks to uncover his literary interests through his selections in Japdongsani.
To this end, the study reviews the general composition of the anecdotal writings excerpted in Japdongsani and focuses specifically on the characteristics of those included in the third volume. The findings reveal that Sunam transcribed a significant number of Joseon-era anecdotal writings to document historical precedents. Furthermore, he included two of China’s Four Great Strange Novels—Water Margin(水滸傳) and Romance of the Three Kingdoms(三國志演義)—as well as two representative plays by Ming-dynasty playwright Tang Xianzu, Peony Pavilion (牡丹亭還魂記) and The Story of the Purple Hairpin(題紫釵記). While Water Margin and Romance of the Three Kingdoms are heroic tales, Peony Pavilion and The Story of the Purple Hairpin are romantic and chivalric narratives. Notably, The Story of the Purple Hairpin was relatively unknown among Joseon literati, making its inclusion particularly significant. These four works are transcribed in considerable detail within Japdongsani, indicating Sunam's broad scholarly inclinations.
Moreover, Water Margin and Romance of the Three Kingdoms reflect conservative perspectives within the framework of the Four Great Strange Novels, further underscored by debates surrounding the legitimacy of the Shu Han in Chinese historiography.
In conclusion, this study underscores Sunam's diverse literary interests as reflected in his inclusion of anecdotal writings in Japdongsani, offering a foundation for further scholarly inquiry into the scope and implications of his literary pursuits.
