유아들의 경험으로부터 본 조기유학의 빛과 그늘 = The Light and Shade of Early Studying Abroad from Children's Experiences

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this research study is to explore the experiences of young Korean children during their short period of studying abroad. Narrative inquiry was used as the research methodology, as conceptualized by Connelly and Clandinin(1990, 2000). Data was collected for 8 months from April to December 2007, using conversations with two Korean young children who were in grade one. Data analysis was made in a more holistic way than coding.
The stories of the two children's experiences clearly indicate that there were tensions, difficulties, and uncertainties in the process of adjusting in a foreign country. For both children, English was the greatest barrier in this process of adjusting to their new foreign landscape. This study provides an opportunity for teachers, teacher educators, policy makers, and administrators to consider improvement in curriculum making and implementation in the area of second language education.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구에서는 자신의 의지와는 상관없이 부모의 의사결정에 의해 조기유학을 오게 된 유아들이 낯선 외국의 학교에서 겪는 경험을 내러티브 탐구 방법을 통해 이해하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 한국에서 유치원을 마치고 캐나다로 조기유학을 온 후, 연구 진행 당시 초등학교 1학년에 다니고 있던 건우와 민정이, 그리고 그들의 어머니들과 총 9개월에 걸친 대화를 통해 수집된 자료를 분석하였다. 유아들의 일기, 미술작품, 학교 수업시간 동안의 활동자료, 과제물, 유아들이 쓴 편지 등이 보조 자료로 사용되었다. 건우는 조기유학동안 아빠와의 이별과 영어의 부족으로 인해 학교생활 초기에 어려움을 겪었으나, 한국인으로서의 정체성을 잃지 않기 위해 한국말을 잊어버리지 않으려는 의지도 보여주었다. 민정이 역시 영어의 부족으로 학교생활 적응과정에서 어려움을 겪었으나, 한국말과 영어를 모두 할 수 있는 한국인 친구의 도움과 담임교사의 배려로 점차 안정된 학교생활을 할 수 있었다. 건우와 민정이의 이야기가 부모, 유아교육자, 행정가들로 하여금 유아들의 조기유학의 목적이 무엇인지, 유아에게 반드시 필요한 일인지, 조기유학 이외의 방법은 없는지 등에 대해 신중하게 생각해 볼 수 있는 기회를 제공하였을 것으로 기대한다.
