This study is a fundamental research conducted to contribute to the development of counseling model programs that can realize healthy self-actualization with their potential and the adaptation to the stress the children ceaselessly confronted. In its methodology, this study attempted to seek for the possibility of integrating the western counseling theories, the oriental ones and their models by introducing meditation.
To accomplish the purpose, the following hypotheses could be stated as follows:
First, the stress levels will differ from the meditation, exercise, and control groups.
Second, the effects of Breath-Counting Meditation will last for more than 4 weeks after the termination of the program.
To verify these hypotheses, 6th-grade students of O-elementary school in Busan selected for three groups, who wanted to participate in the meditation program. 8 students participated in the meditation group; 10students in the exercise, and; 10students in the control (a total of 28 students).
The Breath-Counting Meditation program was practiced to the meditation group through 25 times (5 times a week, for 5 weeks) for 45-65 minutes every time. Only the preparational stage of the Breath-Counting Meditation program provided the exercise group with 25 times (5 times a week, for 5 weeks) for 30-40 minutes every time. No treatment was applied to the control group.
The program used in this study was made with Buddhist Zen exercise, Doin gymnastics in Dan-hak, Osho meditation, and the Breath-Counting Meditation method as a main by the researcher. 'Korean Children's Daily-Life Stress Scale'(by Won Joo Jeong, 1997) as the method for measuring was used with the existing tools and the result of the test was processed with statics.
The conclusion from the results is as follows:
First, the Breath-Counting meditation program conducted in this study is effective in reducing the children's stress.
Second, the stress-reducing effect of the meditation group comes entirely from the Breath-Counting Meditation . The exercise practiced in the pre-meditation stage has no effect on the stress reduction.
Third, it is interpreted that the period of the meditation program(5 weeks in 25 times) is so short that the effect can not last for more than 4 weeks after the termination of the program.
