This study aims to clarify the concept and necessity of CALP(Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency) of Korean for the improvement of academic skills of student from multi-cultural families, and to analyze the CALP of Korean vocabulary based on The KSL(Korean as a Second Language) curriculum and to present the education plan.
This study started with the recognition that the cause of the phenomenon that the number of student from multi-cultural families is increasing but their attendance rate is decreasing and the school drop rate is increasing. In fact, student from multi-cultural families have no difficulty in communicating in everyday life as the grade increases, but it turns out that they are having difficulty in studying as the content of learning becomes more difficult and the usage of the concept and conjecture word increases. Therefore, it is essential that student from multi-cultural families learn CALP of Korean to help them understand key concepts and contents in curriculum or out of curriculum time to solve the problem of poor learning and to adapt to school life. However, such education is not done well in actual school field. Even studies on CALP of Korean education are only being conducted on the necessity and the list of vocabulary, and research on teaching methods of how to teach CALP of Korean is hardly done. Learning CALP of Korean education is needed in the Korean language department to solve the problem of the learning underachievement of student from multi-cultural families, because the Korean language course is a curriculum that teaches a language as a tool for learning various subjects and a necessary subject for them to adapt to public education.
Starting from awareness of this problem, the study presents an effective way to educate CALP of Korean vocabulary that can effectively help students from multi-cultural families to improve their academic ability, and based on this education method, the study finally aims to lay the foundation for CALP of Korean vocabulary education. However, this study examines the educational methods by CALP of Korean vocabulary lists presented in the KSL curriculum revised in 2015, since the KSL curriculum revised in 2017 has not presented CALP of Korean vocabulary lists yet. Therefore, this study analyzes the nature, concepts, goals and system of content of CALP of Korean by not only the KSL curriculum published in 2012, but also the KSL curriculum revised and published in 2017, and this study revealed the significance of CALP of Korean for improving academic ability of students from multi-cultural families. Then, a systematic education model of CALP of Korean vocabulary was presented by analyzing CALP of Korean vocabulary and referring to existing Korean language teaching methods and vocabulary education models. According to the class guidelines, the contents and methods of CALP of Korean vocabulary education were designed in order to enable practical education. Among students from multi-cultural families, middle school students were targeted at the education, and the aim was to help them improve their academic ability by learning CALP of Korean vocabulary. The method of education was to utilize the after-school classes for student to prepare regular classes in advance, and to provide education by dividing the list of CALP of Korean vocabulary lists presented in the KSL curriculum by subject.
The study conducted around the above processes has significance in three aspects. First of all, the study suggests an educational model of CALP of Korean vocabulary and concrete education methods. While studies have so far raised the importance of CALP of Korean to improve the academic ability of students from multi-cultural families, concrete education methods have been insufficient. Thus, the education models and methods suggested in this study can contribute to the development of concrete educational methods for students from multi-cultural families to learn CALP of Korean vocabulary effectively. Second, this study analyzed the characteristics of CALP of Korean vocabulary with students from multi-cultural families and applied them to the education model for effective education. There have been many studies on the characteristics of students from multi-cultural families or the importance of CALP of Korean lanaguage, but there haven’t been many studies to analyze these characteristics and apply them to education models for CALP of Korean vocabulary education. In this regard, suggestion on education models and methods can be seen as taking a step forward in realizing effective education for students from multi-cultural families. Third, by presenting a CALP of Korean teaching-learning strategy as a model, it can be applied not only to the vocabulary presented in the existing the KSL curriculum, but also to the education of CALP of Korean vocabulary newly introduced in the revised curriculum, and it can be applied to lesson units of various subjects in each school. Although this study limited CALP of Korean in Korean education for middle school student, it would be applicable to CALP of Korean education in different grades and various subject based on this model and each teaching-learning strategy. It is expected that student from multi-cultural families will be able to improve their academic ability.
