This study aimed to clarify the relationship between smartphone use and mental health, focusing on depressive mood and suicidal ideation among Korean adolescents. Using data from the 20th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey (2024), a nationally representative dataset, a total of 47,639 participants were analyzed. Smartphone use time was categorized into daily, weekday, and weekend averages and divided into two groups based on a 4-hour daily threshold. Complex-sample chi-square tests and multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to identify related factors while controlling for sociodemographic, lifestyle, and health related variables. The results showed that longer daily and weekday smartphone use were significantly associated with a higher risk of depressive mood, but not with suicidal ideation. Weekend use showed no significant association with either variables. Female students, middle school students, those with poorer perceived health, higher stress levels, smoking or drinking experience, and higher anxiety score (GAD-7) were more likely to report both depressive mood and suicidal ideation. In conclusion, excessive daily and weekday smartphone use among Korean adolescents is independently associated with depressive mood but not with suicidal ideation. These findings suggest that mental health interventions for adolescents should not only focus on limiting screen time but also integrate stress and anxiety management programs to promote healthier digital lifestyles.
