고려시대 초조대장경(初雕大藏經) 『어제비장전(御製秘藏詮)』 판화의 내용과 의미 = The Content and Significance of Woodcut Prints in the Text ‘Eojebijangjeon’ from the Goryeo-Period First Edition of the Tripitaka Koreana

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

53 woodblock prints of the text Eojebijangjeon from the Goryeo-period first edition of the Tripitaka Koreana are currently housed at Nanzenji Temple in Japan. Unlike other Goryeo woodblock prints, which faithfully convey the content of Buddhist scriptures through pictorial engravings, those of Eojebijangjeon call to mind the form of a landscape painting. In this study, I attempt to reconsider the significance and value of Eojebijangjeon by examining the content and meaning of these prints.
Their content is as follows: 1. Each book in Volumes 1-20 of Eojebijangjeon (Volume 17 is missing) contains five prints; most of these are located in the same page positions (1, 5, 9, 13 and 17).
2. The approximately 50 prints included in Volumes 1-10 are generally repeated in Volumes 11-20.
3. The prints in Volume 13 of a Northern Song copy of Eojebijangjeon in the collection of Harvard Library in the United States and in Volume 13 of the Goryeo period copy at Nanzenji differ in terms of iconography and page location. This implies that duplication of prints was possible, and that they could be rearranged if necessary.
4. The fact that the box number of the prints is marked as “6(六)”, “7(七)” suggests the possibility that scripture texts and pictorial engravings were produced separately.
5. The prints portray itinerant monks entering the mountains in search of enlightenment. The depiction of these monks is similar to that in Xuanzang qujingtu (“paintings of Xuanzang’s journey in search of the scriptures”), a genre popular at around the same time in China. It is therefore believed that the Eojebijangjeon woodcuts were influenced by Xuanzang qujingtu.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

현재 일본 난젠지에는 고려시대 초조대장경(初雕大藏經) 『어제비장전(御製秘藏詮)』 판화본 53점이 소장되어 있으며, 이는 다른 고려시대 판화본들이 경전의 내용을 충실히 도해(圖解)한 것과 달리 한 폭의산수화를 연상시키는 삽화형식을 취하고 있다. 이 판화의 내용과 의미에 대한 고찰을 통해 초조대장경『어제비장전』이 갖는 의의와 가치를 되짚어 보고자 하였으며 그 내용을 정리하면 다음과 같다.
1. 『어제비장전』의 권1-20(권17 결본)의 각 책에는 5장의 판화가 삽입되어 있으며 대부분 동일한 위치(장차(張次) 1, 5, 9, 13, 17)에 자리한다.
2. 대체로 권1-10까지 수록된 50여개의 판화는 권11-20까지 중복 사용되었다.
3. 미국 하버드대학교 소장 북송본 『어제비장전』 권13과 남선사(南禪寺) 소장의 고려본 『어제비장전』 권13의 변상판화(變相版畵)는 도상과 삽입된 위치가 각기 다른 것으로 확인된다. 이것은 동일판본의 중복이 가능하고, 필요하다면 재배열이 가능하다는 점을 시사한다.
4. 또한 판화의 함차(函次)가 숫자(六·七)로 나타난 것은 경문과 판화가 별도로 제작되었을 가능성을 내포한다.
5. 판화의 내용은 입산구법(入山求法)의 행각승(行脚僧)을 묘사하고 있으며, 특히 이러한 행각승들의모습은 당시 비슷한 시기에 중국에서 유행한 <현장취경도(玄獎取經圖)>와 유사한 것으로 그 영향을받은 것이라 생각된다.
