Art-studio is one of the cultural phenomenon that recently take place in Korea. Initiating as a mean for support from artists, the concept and role of Art-studio have been expanded as integrated cultural spaces. Revitalizing mainly in America and Europe in 1960's, Art-studio start expanding exchange with institutions from the creation of Alliance of Artists Communities in America and international association of creative work program. In Korea, Art-studios start settling as cultural policies supporting artistic institutions and vitalizations of facility management in late 1990's, leading to establish more than thousands of government managed Art-studios that are open to public including ones operated by individuals, local self-governments. Such Art-studios are utilized as a space for exchange between artists and between artists and audiences, conveying vitalization of regional economy by exploiting cultures. Art-studios are exploited as integrated cultural spaces regardless of artistic genre.
The gist of this study mainly touches how Art-studios influence on the inter-relationship between artists, regions, and audiences, covering beyond spatial plans of Art-studios. In other words, it focuses on how artists require particular environment for their works, how audiences prefer to have an artistic impact, and how much this new environment from local residents vitalizes regional economy. Using a key word, "communication," spaces with various cultural themes on a basis of relationship between authors and artists, artists and audiences, and artists and local residents.
In order to do that, this study proceeds based on the concept of culturenomics. Investigating on how cultures influence on economy, spatial backgrounds of Art-studios represent an image of restoration, exploiting of idle industrial facilities. In a broad range of the study, it covers potential values of idle industrial facilities and restoration of the city by cultural, economical, and environmental sides. In addition, the study grasps economical values of Art-studios, why they are in need, and how they are managed, applying them to design. According to analysis of cases in domestic and abroad, almost all of cases use and exploit spaces based on residency program, differing rates of spatial configuration according to the degree of weights on programs in each studio. Based on weights of local communities, spaces for exhibition and education are given more priority, and cultural and creative spaces that are recently planned out attach great importance on communication between creators and audiences or between genres.
In other words, the main objective of current Art-studios based on the concept of culturenomics exploiting idle industrial facilities is to suggest programs and
creative spaces, leading to region activation and share of creative desires and cultural arts. Ultimately, spaces enabling communication with artists along with activation of local communities and spaces where share cultures are expected to be created.
