A school should not be just a functional space for delivery of knowledge but a space where communication and beautiful culture coexist. To students who spend most of the day at school, it is valuable as the current space of life for a long period of time, not the space for a preparatory process of future society. It should provide students and teachers with pleasure and happiness, and it should be a more beautiful and satisfactory space than any other spaces of the society. Beyond the frame of functional space, it is now a space for cultural experience to develop the creativity and sensibility of students and should change into a place where every day life and learning coexist in beautiful harmony.
By looking into the space design change of foreign schools during the process of this research, it has been found that the change of school space design is an international and historique flow. Many countries including Russia, England, and Australia have improved the school space design in the view point of educational innovation, and the educational policies for improvement of school space are being actively implemented even now.
The change of school space design of Korea has been attempted through the project of 'making happy schools with the activities of Beautiful School Campaign Headquarter and the culture of Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism". A series of projects implemented in the cultural view point have brought a ripple effect on problem awareness diffusion of the standardization and backwardness of school space and on social recognition of the urgency of the change in school space design.
The objective of this research is to secure the positive aspect for improvement of school space design and search for a plan for improvement of school space design by analyzing the process and results of the wall structure, which nurtures the space improvement of the central entrance, establishment of the gallery as a cultural space, and visual cultural function, in Gyeonggi International Trade High School where this researcher works.
The contents of research to accomplish this objective are as follows : First, the central entrance of Gyeonggi International Trade High School has been improved into a sophisticated modern visual environment to improve the image of the school and raise the self-esteem of students. In addition, the development of school design culture has been attempted through the process of actively applying the Visual Identity Design of the school. Such design improvement is meaningful in that it was accomplished through the independent research and efforts of a unit school, and it is regarded as the preparation of a base to secure school competitiveness for response to the future society with fast change and diversification.
Second, the establishment of the gallery as a cultural space could provide, as a plan for efficient improvement of school space with the entrance and corridor, the students with year-around cultural life. The gallery inside the school could change the one-time inefficient display form of the school and bring in improvement of the conditions for cultural education of the school. The gallery establishment inside the school provided more students with experience-based educational opportunity on cultural life, through which the civic consciousness of the students could be raised and the self-regard and values could grow.
Third, the wall structure which nurtured the visual cultural function was the experience process on the impact of visual image. The school space was newly recognized through the process of structuring the wall with famous paintings, and the students and teachers appreciated fine art works and famous paintings, accepting them as daily life with high-level culture. Its change as a beautiful space developed the esthetic response and sensibility of the students, enabling them to look at and feel visual culture in a more positive position.
On the basis of such research contents the following conclusions were made : First, it is essential to improve the school space design for preparation of the environment and conditions for cultural education to educate students into dignified human beings on the basis of correct understanding on cultural attainment and multi-dimensional values.
Second, the improvement of school space design should be implemented in the esthetic and cultural view point. 21st century schools whose cultural importance increases should be improved beautifully as a space for life and culture. The efforts for improvement of school space design would bring in a variety of synergy effects to the cultural development and educational activity of schools.
Third, a variety of types of improvement for school space design should be implemented in accordance with the characteristics and requirements, school structure, educational goal, and school management strategy of a unit school. The research and plan preparation of a unit school for beautiful improvement of school space would lead to implementation of the educational innovation for quality improvement of education.
