      A survey was conducted by the author and students of Choon Hae Junior Nursing School, Pusan Special City from 1 May 1977 through 31 July 1977, on the status of health and mothers and child health. The survey directed to a total population of 1896 residing in 350 households of the Slum area in Chon-po-3-dong, Pusanjin-Ku, Pusan led us to the following findings: 1.) Basic characteristics of respondents. Average number of family per household was 5.4-persons. A study of age distribution of the respondents (20-54 year old married women) shows 20.9% in the age group 50-54,17.4% in 35-39, 15.7% in 40-44,15.2% in 45-49, 13.7% in 30-34, 13.1 % in 25-29 and 4.0% in the age group of 20-24. The women's educational level was lower than Korean's national average for married females. A large proportion had received a primary school education both of wife and husband (39.7% and 38.9%), middle school -23.2% and 22.6%, able to read Korean-19.0% and 21.1%, and high school-11.7% and 11.1%, respectively. The rate of the respondents having a- religion was 43.4 percent, which comprised 34.8 percent for the Buddhists, 2.8 percent for the Catholics. Jobless rated 47.4 percent of the respondents in the slum area. Among those with an occupation, 26.0 percent comprised daily laborers, 14.6 percent peddler, 5.4 percent factory worker, and 3.7 percent retail store. On other hand, jobless rated 38.3 percent of the husbands in the slum area. Among those with an occupation, 22. 9 percent comprised daily labors, 14.6 percent peddler, 11.4 percent white collars worker, 7.1 percent factory worker.
      2) Duration of Marital Lives. The highest rate of the respondents having a marital lives was 31.4 percent in the year group 10-14, 29.2 percent in 20-29, 10.3 percent both of the year group 5-9 and below 5, respectively. 3) Number of Live-birth. Average number of live-birth-was 3.1 children. The average for the number of living children, 2.66 being of which sons and daughters have been computed at 1.44. and 1.22, respectively. The average number of birth and death of children born to the total 350 women can be summarized as shown Table 8-2. 4) “Ideal" Number of Children. About 55. 1% of the respondents regarded 2 sons as “ideal", while 81.11% regarded 1 daughter as “ideal", the average “ideal" number of children being 3.2(sons:2.0 and daughter: 1.2). 5) Live-birth Per Year Of the total, 16.0 percent of women had ever experienced live-birth during the year and
      29.5% of crude birth rate. Deliveries in home were 71.4 percent while 12.5 percent in hospitals, 16.1 percent in
      others, respectively. Of the total, 12.5 percent of all deliveries were attended by physicians and 71.4 percent
      by mothers. Rate obtained from this study for fecundity were 80.9 percent. 6) Practice of Family Planning
      About 33.1 percent of the respondents were currently Practicing Family Planning methods. .Oral pill rated highest among the methods now being used, followed in Frequency by I.U.D., Condom and Operation (Vasectomy or Tubal lagation).
