In modern society, a broad range of diverse cultures quickly exchange and develop together. In order to understand and succeed Korean culture in this flow of globalization, we must understand traditional arts and reproduce them in modern sense. Korean traditional patterns reflect Korean ancestors' thoughts and figurative and existed on daily commodities and in every part of their lives. Thus, it has abundant educational values for the modern people.
The purpose of this study was to encourage appreciation of Korean traditional culture and broad artistic experiences to foster students' potential creativity and original expressions and to enhance educational effect of textile design lectures using Korean traditional patterns.
For this purpose, the meaning and aesthetic value of Korean traditional patterns and the concept and components of textile design were examined through preceded studies and literature survey. Then, the 7th high school fine arts curriculums and textbooks were examined in terms of Korean traditional patterns and textile design. By doing so, I adopted Korean traditional patterns to design textile design classes that stimulate students' interests in new textile design with the convergence of traditional and modern aesthetics and enhance overall educational effect of high school arts classes.
In result, I found the following results:
First, Korean traditional patterns with Korean traditional aesthetics represent Korea's traditional lifestyles, emotions, and ideologies in various aspects of our lives. Also, textile design is closely related to our lives and makes our wardrobe design and interior environments more beautiful and enriched. Using them, we can foster students' aesthetic observation of various commodities in our lives.
I found that various materials, unique expressions, and liberal figurative composition of textile design and the traditional beauty, value and educational contents of Korean traditional patterns could be creative teaching tools for topics relating to traditional arts.
Second, in result of analyzing Korean traditional patterns and textile design related contents in the 7th High School Fine Arts Textbooks, it was found that there are not many helpful descriptions and information on materials, techniques, and handling that directly assist artistic activities for students to use for their artistic creations. In addition, Korean traditional patterns are considered as references and are not applied to actual activities of creation although they are widely used in various aspects. In result, students are not very interested in using Korean traditional patterns.
Third, a textile design class was designed using Korean traditional patterns based on the analysis of the 7th High School Fine Arts Textbook.
The class design involved four sessions of integrative study of all contents. First, the 1st session focused on “understanding and appreciation of Korean traditional patterns” and on students' aesthetic experience. Various objects that use Korean traditional patterns are observed in terms of design elements, characteristics, and symbolism of Korean traditional patterns. Second, the 2nd and 3rd sessions considered ‘textile design through creative Korean traditional patterns.’ These sessions were focused on designing traditional patterns with creativity and originality using various expressions and materials. The 4th session focused on ‘appreciation, comparison, and evaluation of completed pieces’ and on enhancing aesthetic senses while criticizing art and applying new interpretation of traditional patterns to actual objects.
Through these textile design sessions using Korean traditional patterns, students would enhance interests in Korean traditional patterns, and would feel the ideologies and emotions of Korean ancestors by examining and symbolism and figuration of the patterns. Based on their interests and pride in traditional music, they would enhance awareness in tradition and would possibly foster abilities to use tradition in everyday life.
This study proposed a teaching technique in textile design using Korean traditional patterns, but various other traditional elements of Korea could be considered in terms of educational values and brought into classrooms to observe and share with students. By doing so, art education would be enhanced in quality and depth. As traditional art is expected to be emphasized in education, it should be broadly considered in various other subjects.
