The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of Baraboki meditation on the attention of school children.
The subjects in this study were 32 children who were selected by random sampling from among fifth graders at M elementary school in the city of Changweon, south Gyeongsang province. They hoped to participate in the study, and were divided into an experimental group and a control group with 16 each. The experimental group took part in Baraboki meditation in 20 sessions for four weeks, five times a week.
Park Seok(2004)'s Baraboki Meditation Program was reconstructed based on earlier studies and the results of a survey conducted on the children. After the types of things that could draw attention from the children were selected, the program was implemented for four weeks.
The instrument used to assess the effects of the program was Oh Hyeon-suk(2002)'s adapted and standardized version of H. Moosbrugger and J. Oehlschaegel's FAIR Attention Inventory.
To see if the two groups were equivalent to each other in terms of attention, t-test was utilized, and repeated measure ANOVA was employed to track any possible overall, intergroup and intragroup gaps in attention subfactors, including selective, controlled and sustained attention. The findings of the study were as follows:
First, the Baraboki meditation program was effective in boosting the overall attention of the elementary schoolers.
Second, the Baraboki meditation program had a good effect on improving the selective attention of the elementary school youngsters.
Third, the Baraboki meditation program contributed to enhancing the controlled attention of the school children.
Fourth, the Baraboki meditation program served to develop the sustained attention of the elementary schoolers.
Based on the above-mentioned findings, it's concluded that the Baraboki meditation program has a good effect on boosting the attention of school children.
