The purpose of this study was to investigate the nutritional effects of heel lifting exercises with kinesio taping on an unstable support surface on lower extremity muscle activity and balance in college students and to provide basic data that can be utilized for exercise therapy interventions.
The subjects of this study were college students aged 19 to 29 years old who were enrolled in N University in Gwangju Metropolitan City and were randomly divided into two groups: 30 subjects with Kinesio tape (experimental group) and 30 subjects without Kinesio tape (control group). Subjects in each group performed the exercises three times a week for a total of four weeks, performing 15 reps per set for a total of five repetitions. Each group had their muscle activity and balance measured before and after 8 weeks of exercise. For muscle activity, surface electromyography (sEMG) was used to measure Peroneus Longus, Tibialis Anterior, Gestrcnemius Lateral Head, Gestronemius Medial Head, and Soleus, and for balance, static balance and dynamic balance were measured using a balance meter (Bio Rescue).
Independent t-test was used to test the significance between and within groups for each measurement period, and paired t-test was used to test the changes in each measurement period and the differences between and within groups, and the following results were obtained.
First, there was a significant difference in muscle activity in the vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, and soleus muscles between the two groups, while there was no significant difference in muscle activity in the long calf and anterior tibialis muscles.
Second, there was a significant difference in muscle activity between the two groups over time for all measured muscles.
Third, there were no significant differences in dynamic and static balance between the two groups.
Fourth, there were significant differences in dynamic and static balance between the two groups.
This study demonstrated that heel raising exercises on an unstable support surface with taping were effective in increasing lower extremity muscle activity, suggesting the potential for taping-related exercise therapy interventions.
