A human being is the social existence who has a relation and lives with other people from the birth. Also, in the world that changes faster and more complicatedly, its social relation and each individual's role also come to be broadened and diversified. Aiming to be well adapted to this modern society, a method, which is harmonized and lives with other people, needs to be learnt. Consequently, the purpose of this study is to design the classroom-based social skill training program in order to enhance children's social skill, and to verify its effects on social skill of low graders in elementary school. As for the research problems that were established in order to achieve these research objectives, first, how does the social skill training program need to be formed? Second, what about the effects of the developed social skill training program?
The research subjects for verifying the research problems were composed of two classrooms in the 2nd grade at one elementary school where is located in Suwon-si, Gyeonggi-do. The classroom, which is similar to career or gender in a researcher was distributed to the control group, and the classroom of a researcher was distributed to the experimental group, thus the program in totally 10 sessions was conducted only as to the experimental group. This program had the basic frame as 'school counseling program Ⅰ’ by Gang Jin-ryeong and Yu Hyeong-Keun(2004), which was developed on the basis of a model for the social moral virtue and the integrated school counseling in low graders of elementary school, which was extracted by Jang Jong-sim(2007). And, it was referred and modified ‘development and application of school counseling program for the 1st graders in elementary school’ by Ji Eun-sil(2005), ‘design of school counseling program for the 2nd graders in elementary school’ by Jo Sun-ho(2005), ‘Skills For Living’ by Morganett, Rosemarie Smead(2001), 'group counseling for children' by Kim Chun-gyeong et al.(2004), and ‘group counseling for our classroom’ by Gang Tae-sim et al.(2004). Thus, the program was formed in totally 10 sessions for social skill.
The test tool was used 'social-skill test.' And, pre-and-post test was carried out as for students in two groups. As for data processing, the mean and standard deviation were obtained with technical statistics. The statistical analysis was performed through MANCOVA in SPSS/Window 11.5. And, in order to supplement limitations to reliability that the quantitative result has, the experience report and the counselor observation contents by secession were analyzed and then presented by hypothesis.
Regarding the results of this study, the social-skill score significantly increased between the experimental group, which participated in the social-skill training program, and the control group, thereby having been indicated to have positive effect on improving social skill. Therefore, it can be concluded that the social-skill training program has the effect on enhancing social skill in low graders of elementary school.
As for the implications of this study, first, as a counseling guideline for the effective social skill improvement, it may be good data given operating consultation. Second, it has a significance in a sense that enhanced social skill by learning a method of improving social skill after forming the classroom-based systematic and preventive program centering on sub-factors in social skill. Third, it promoted social skill by teaching a method of the right social-skill enhancement to children who fail to be close with friends due to lack of social skill, and have difficulty in observing order and rule at school and in getting along well with friends. Fourth, in addition to occurrence of mutual argument, it allowed children to have a positive thought that needs to solve a problem by keeping order or rule on all the scenes of living, by understanding each other, and by cooperating. And, it offered an opportunity of being able to realize that a friend or family is the most precious existence, and to properly express own emotion.
Given making a suggestion for a follow-up research based on the results and conclusions in this study, those are as follows. First, a research is needed, which the effects, which were shown in the results of this study, can be compared and discussed by comparing with the effect of follow-up researches. Second, a future test is needed in order to examine the steady effect of the social-skill training program. Third, the development in a research is required, which can compare the effects depending on characteristics of the research subjects. Fourth, a research is needed, which tries to verify effects by applying it even to mid-and-high grade through reconstructing it as the activity in line with the developmental phase in each of the target school years as well as low grade. Fifth, more researches will need to be existed in the content formation and in the operation method of the group counseling program for the social-skill enhancement.
