This study is to find out the relationship among parental harmony, emotional intelligence and playfulness of children according to their gender.
336 elementary school students who attend schools located in Daegu and are in the fifth grade were the subjects of the study. As a tool to measure the parental harmony, Parental harmony test drafted by Keum Hee Park(1986), based on Dyadic Adjustment Scale by Spanier(1976), Marital Satisfaction Inventory by Snyder(1979), Parental Harmony Scale by Ellison(1983), and Parental Harmony Scale by Jin Sook Park(1994) were used together. To measure emotional intelligence, Emotional Intelligence Test developed by Young Yae Park et al.(2000a) was utilized and Children's Playfulness Scale made by Barnett(1991) was used to measure the playfulness of children.
Collected data were statistically processed by the methods frequency, percentage, average, standard deviation, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe-test, Correlation Analysis, and Canonical Correlation Analysis.
The results of the study were as follows:
1. The parental harmony children perceived showed the highest in the parent-combination field that children usually perceived their parents to be acceptable and harmonious. Emotional intelligence and playfulness of children were perceived in the middle level and the ability to perceive emotion and social voluntary were developed the highest among the sub-factors.
2. Regarding the variable difference based on the characteristics of children and family background, the higher education level parents have, the more influence they give on parental harmony, emotional intelligence and playfulness of children. The study showed that the occupation of father had influence on parental harmony, emotional intelligence and playfulness of children and whether mother has a job or not also had impact on emotional intelligence and playfulness of children.
3. The higher parental harmony they have, the higher emotional intelligence they have. For all children, parental harmony and wedding compatibility influenced emotional intelligence in children education. For male children, parental harmony showed the most influence on emotional intelligence in children education which also have a great impact on emotion control toward others and emotion expression. For female children, there was no distinctive variable which could give influence statistically.
4. The higher parental harmony they have, the higher playfulness they have. For male children and all children, parental harmony and wedding compatibility were the factors which had the most influence on the playfulness of children. They also had the most influence on the voluntary of perception and body.
5. The higher playfulness they have, the higher emotional intelligence they have. For all children, voluntary of perception and sense of humor influenced the most to emotional control toward others and the expression of emotion.
The expression of cheerfulness was revealed to give the most influence on emotional recognition, emotional self-control and power to utilize emotion for male children. For female children, sense of humor was the factor which gives the most influence on emotional recognition, emotional control toward others and the expression of emotion.
